FAST as the rolling seasons bringA
The hour of fate to those we loveB
Each pearl that leaves the broken stringA
Is set in Friendship's crown aboveB
As narrower grows the earthly chainC
The circle widens in the skyD
These are our treasures that remainC
But those are stars that beam on highD
-
-
We miss oh how we miss his faceE
With trembling accents speak his nameF
Earth cannot fill his shadowed placeE
From all her rolls of pride and fameF
Our song has lost the silvery threadG
That carolled through his jocund lipsH
Our laugh is mute our smile is fledG
And all our sunshine in eclipseH
-
And what and whence the wondrous charmI
That kept his manhood boylike stillJ
That life's hard censors could disarmI
And lead them captive at his willJ
His heart was shaped of rosier clayK
His veins were filled with ruddier fireL
Time could not chill him fortune swayK
Nor toil with all its burdens tireL
-
His speech burst throbbing from its fountG
And set our colder thoughts aglowM
As the hot leaping geysers mountG
And falling melt the Iceland snowM
Some word perchance we counted rashN
Some phrase our calmness might disclaimF
Yet 't was the sunset's lightning's flashN
No angry bolt but harmless flameF
-
Man judges all God knoweth eachO
We read the rule He sees the lawP
How oft his laughing children teachO
The truths his prophets never sawP
O friend whose wisdom flowered in mirthQ
Our hearts are sad our eyes are dimR
He gave thy smiles to brighten earthQ
We trust thy joyous soul to HimR
-
Alas our weakness Heaven forgiveS
We murmur even while we trustG
'How long earth's breathing burdens liveT
Whose hearts before they die are dust '-
But thou through grief's untimely tearsU
We ask with half reproachful sighD
'Couldst thou not watch a few brief yearsV
Till Friendship faltered 'Thou mayst die' '-
-
Who loved our boyish years so wellW
Who knew so well their pleasant talesX
And all those livelier freaks could tellW
Whose oft told story never failsX
In vain we turn our aching eyesY
In vain we stretch our eager handsZ
Cold in his wintry shroud he liesY
Beneath the dreary drifting sandsZ
-
Ah speak not thus He lies not thereA2
We see him hear him as of oldG
He comes He claims his wonted chairA2
His beaming face we still beholdG
His voice rings clear in all our songsB2
And loud his mirthful accents riseY
To us our brother's life belongsB2
Dear friends a classmate never diesY
