PRELUDE TO 'ILLUSTRATED POEMS'A
-
FULL well I know the frozen hand has comeB
That smites the songs of grove and garden dumbB
And chills sad autumn's last chrysanthemumB
-
Yet would I find one blossom if I mightC
Ere the dark loom that weaves the robe of whiteC
Hides all the wrecks of summer out of sightC
-
Sometimes in dim November's narrowing dayD
When all the season's pride has passed awayD
As mid the blackened stems and leaves we strayD
-
We spy in sheltered nook or rocky cleftE
A starry disk the hurrying winds have leftE
Of all its blooming sisterhood bereftE
-
Some pansy with its wondering baby eyesA
Poor wayside nursling fixed in blank surpriseA
At the rough welcome of unfriendly skiesA
-
Or golden daisy will it dare disclaimF
The lion's tooth to wear this gentler nameF
Or blood red salvia with its lips aflameF
-
The storms have stripped the lily and the roseA
Still on its cheek the flush of summer glowsA
And all its heart leaves kindle as it blowsA
-
So had I looked some bud of song to findG
The careless winds of autumn left behindG
With these of earlier seasons' growth to bindG
-
Ah me my skies are dark with sudden griefH
A flower lies faded on my garnered sheafH
Yet let the sunshine gild this virgin leafH
-
The joyous blessed sunshine of the pastI
Still with me though the heavens are overcastI
The light that shines while life and memory lastI
-
Go pictured rhymes for loving readers meantJ
Bring back the smiles your jocund morning lentJ
And warm their hearts with sunbeams yet unspentJ
