AUGUSTA
-
WE welcome you Lords of the Land of the SunB
The voice of the many sounds feebly through oneB
Ah would 't were a voice of more musical toneC
But the dog star is here and the song birds have flownC
-
And what shall I sing that can cheat you of smilesD
Ye heralds of peace from the Orient islesD
If only the Jubilee Why did you waitE
You are welcome but oh you're a little too lateE
-
We have greeted our brothers of Ireland and FranceF
Round the fiddle of Strauss we have joined in the danceF
We have lagered Herr Saro that fine looking manG
And glorified Godfrey whose name it is DanG
-
What a pity we've missed it and you've missed it tooH
We had a day ready and waiting for youH
We'd have shown you provided of course you had comeI
You 'd have heard no you would n't because it was dumbI
-
And then the great organ The chorus's shoutJ
Like the mixture teetotalers call 'Cold without'J
A mingling of elements strong but not sweetJ
And the drum just referred to that 'couldn't be beat '-
-
The shrines of our pilgrims are not like your ownC
Where white Fusiyama lifts proudly its coneC
The snow mantled mountain we see on the fanG
That cools our hot cheeks with a breeze from JapanG
-
But ours the wide temple where worship is freeK
As the wind of the prairie the wave of the seaK
You may build your own altar wherever you willL
For the roof of that temple is over you stillL
-
One dome overarches the star bannered shoreM
You may enter the Pope's or the Puritan's doorM
Or pass with the Buddhist his gateway of bronzeN
For a priest is but Man be he bishop or bonzeN
-
And the lesson we teach with the sword and the penO
Is to all of God's children 'We also are menO
If you wrong us we smart if you prick us we bleedJ
If you love us no quarrel with color or creed '-
-
You'll find us a well meaning free spoken crowdJ
Good natured enough but a little too loudJ
To be sure there is always a bit of a rowP
When we choose our Tycoon and especially nowQ
-
You'll take it all calmly we want you to seeN
What a peaceable fight such a contest can beN
And of one thing be certain however it endsN
You will find that our voters have chosen your friendsN
-
If the horse that stands saddled is first in the raceN
You will greet your old friend with the weed in his faceN
And if the white hat and the White House agreeN
You'll find H G really as loving as heN
-
But oh what a pity once more I must sayN
That we could not have joined in a 'Japanese day'J
Such greeting we give you to night as we canG
Long life to our brothers and friends of JapanG
-
The Lord of the mountain looks down from his crestJ
As the banner of morning unfurls in the WestJ
The Eagle was always the friend of the SunB
You are welcome The song of the cage bird is doneB
