DECEMBERA
-
ONE word to the guest we have gathered to greetB
The echoes are longing that word to repeatB
It springs to the lips that are waiting to partC
For its syllables spell themselves first in the heartC
-
Its accents may vary its sound may be strangeD
But it bears a kind message that nothing can changeD
The dwellers by Neva its meaning can tellE
For the smile its interpreter shows it full wellE
-
That word How it gladdened the Pilgrim yoreF
As he stood in the snow on the desolate shoreF
When the shout of the sagamore startled his earG
In the phrase of the Saxon 't was music to hearG
-
Ah little could Samoset offer our sireA
The cabin the corn cake the seat by the fireA
He had nothing to give the poor lord of the landH
But he gave him a WELCOME his heart in his handH
-
The tribe of the sachem has melted awayI
But the word that he spoke is remembered to dayI
And the page that is red with the record of shameJ
The tear drops have whitened round Samoset's nameJ
-
The word that he spoke to the Pilgrim of oldK
May sound like a tale that has often been toldK
But the welcome we speak is as fresh as the dewL
As the kiss of a lover that always is newL
-
Ay Guest of the Nation each roof is thine ownM
Through all the broad continent's star bannered zoneM
From the shore where the curtain of morn is uprolledL
To the billows that flow through the gateway of goldL
-
The snow crested mountains are calling aloudL
Nevada to Ural speaks out of the cloudL
And Shasta shouts forth from his throne in the skyN
To the storm splintered summits the peaks of AltaiN
-
You must leave him they say till the summer is greenO
Both shores are his home though the waves roll betweenO
And then we'll return him with thanks for the sameJ
As fresh and as smiling and tall as he cameJ
-
But ours is the region of arctic delightL
We can show him auroras and pole stars by nightL
There's a Muscovy sting in the ice tempered airP
And our firesides are warm and our maidens are fairP
-
The flowers are full blown in the garlanded hallQ
They will bloom round his footsteps wherever they fallQ
For the splendors of youth and the sunshine they bringR
Make the roses believe 't is the summons of SpringR
-
One word of our language he needs must know wellE
But another remains that is harder to spellE
We shall speak it so ill if he wishes to learnS
How we utter Farewell he will have to returnS
