JULYA
-
Now smiling friends and shipmates allB
Since half our battle 's wonC
A broadside for our AdmiralD
Load every crystal gunC
Stand ready till I give the wordE
You won't have time to tireF
And when that glorious name is heardE
Then hip hurrah and fireF
-
Bow foremost sinks the rebel craftG
Our eyes not sadly turnH
And see the pirates huddling aftG
To drop their raft asternH
Soon o'er the sea worm's destined preyI
The lifted wave shall closeJ
So perish from the face of dayI
All Freedom's banded foesK
-
But ah what splendors fire the skyA
What glories greet the mornH
The storm tost banner streams on highA
Its heavenly hues new bornH
Its red fresh dyed in heroes' bloodL
Its peaceful white more pureM
To float unstained o'er field and floodL
While earth and seas endureM
-
All shapes before the driving blastN
Must glide from mortal viewO
Black roll the billows of the pastN
Behind the present's blueO
Fast fast are lessening in the lightP
The names of high renownH
Van Tromp's proud besom fades from sightP
And Nelson's half hull downH
-
Scarce one tall frigate walks the seaQ
Or skirts the safer shoresR
Of all that bore to victoryQ
Our stout old commodoresR
Hull Bainbridge Porter where are theyI
The waves their answer rollS
'Still bright in memory's sunset rayI
God rest each gallant soul '-
-
A brighter name must dim their lightP
With more than noontide rayI
The Sea King of the 'River Fight '-
The Conqueror of the BayI
Now then the broadside cheer on cheerT
To greet him safe on shoreU
Health peace and many a bloodless yearT
To fight his battles o'erF
