'While stands the Coliseum Rome shall standA
When falls the Coliseum Rome shall fall 'B
-
FULL sevenscore years our city's prideC
The comely Southern spireD
Has cast its shadow and defiedC
The storm the foe the fireE
Sad is the sight our eyes beholdF
Woe to the three hilled townG
When through the land the tale is toldF
'The brave 'Old South' is down '-
-
Let darkness blot the starless dawnH
That hears our children tellI
'Here rose the walls now wrecked and goneH
Our fathers loved so wellI
Here while his brethren stood aloofJ
The herald's blast was blownK
That shook St Stephen's pillared roofJ
And rocked King George's throneK
-
'The home bound wanderer of the mainL
Looked from his deck afarM
To where the gilded glittering vaneL
Shone like the evening starM
And pilgrim feet from every climeN
The floor with reverence trodO
Where holy memories made sublimeN
The shrine of Freedom's God '-
-
The darkened skies alas have seenP
Our monarch tree laid lowQ
And spread in ruins o'er the greenP
But Nature struck the blowQ
No scheming thrift its downfall plannedA
It felt no edge of steelR
No soulless hireling raised his handA
The deadly stroke to dealR
-
In bridal garlands pale and muteS
Still pleads the storied towerE
These are the blossoms but the fruitS
Awaits the golden showerE
The spire still greets the morning sunT
Say shall it stand or fallU
Help ere the spoiler has begunT
Help each and God help allU
