AUGUSTA
-
THOUGH watery deserts hold apartB
The worlds of East and WestC
Still beats the selfsame human heartB
In each proud Nation's breastC
-
Our floating turret tempts the mainD
And dares the howling blastE
To clasp more close the golden chainD
That long has bound them fastE
-
In vain the gales of ocean sweepF
In vain the billows roarG
That chafe the wild and stormy steepF
Of storied ElsinoreG
-
She comes She comes her banners dipH
In Neva's flashing tideI
With greetings on her cannon's lipH
The storm god's iron brideI
-
Peace garlands with the olive boughJ
Her thunder bearing towerK
And plants before her cleaving prowJ
The sea foam's milk white flowerK
-
No prairies heaped their garnered storeG
To fill her sunless holdL
Not rich Nevada's gleaming oreG
Its hidden caves infoldL
-
But lightly as the sea bird swingsM
She floats the depths aboveN
A breath of flame to lend her wingsM
Her freight a people's loveN
-
When darkness hid the starry skiesO
In war's long winter nightL
One ray still cheered our straining eyesO
The far off Northern lightL
-
And now the friendly rays returnP
From lights that glow afarQ
Those clustered lamps of Heaven that burnP
Around the Western StarQ
-
A nation's love in tears and smilesR
We bear across the seaS
O Neva of the banded islesR
We moor our hearts in theeS
