THE Play is over While the lightA
Yet lingers in the darkening hallB
I come to say a last Good nightA
Before the final Exeunt allB
-
We gathered once a joyous throngC
The jovial toasts went gayly roundD
With jest and laugh and shout and songC
We made the floors and walls resoundD
-
We come with feeble steps and slowE
A little band of four or fiveF
Left from the wrecks of long agoE
Still pleased to find ourselves aliveF
-
Alive How living too are theyG
Whose memories it is ours to shareH
Spread the long table's full arrayG
There sits a ghost in every chairH
-
One breathing form no more alasI
Amid our slender group we seeJ
With him we still remained 'The Class '-
Without his presence what are weJ
-
The hand we ever loved to claspK
That tireless hand which knew no restL
Loosed from affection's clinging graspK
Lies nerveless on the peaceful breastL
-
The beaming eye the cheering voiceM
That lent to life a generous glowE
Whose every meaning said 'Rejoice '-
We see we hear no more belowE
-
The air seems darkened by his lossN
Earth's shadowed features look less fairH
And heavier weighs the daily crossN
His willing shoulders helped us bearH
-
Why mourn that we the favored fewO
Whom grasping Time so long has sparedP
Life's sweet illusions to pursueO
The common lot of age have sharedP
-
In every pulse of Friendship's heartQ
There breeds unfelt a throb of painR
One hour must rend its links apartQ
Though years on years have forged the chainR
-
-
-
So ends 'The Boys ' a lifelong playG
We too must hear the Prompter's callB
To fairer scenes and brighter dayG
Farewell I let the curtain fallB
