THE summer dawn is breakingA
On Auburn's tangled bowersB
The golden light is wakingA
On Harvard's ancient towersB
The sun is in the skyC
That must see us do or dieC
Ere it shine on the lineD
Of the CLASS OF 'E
-
At last the day is endedF
The tutor screws no moreG
By doubt and fear attendedF
Each hovers round the doorG
Till the good old Praeses criesH
While the tears stand in his eyesH
'You have passed and are classedI
With the Boys of ' '-
-
Not long are they in makingA
The college halls their ownJ
Instead of standing shakingA
Too bashful to be knownJ
But they kick the Seniors' shinsH
Ere the second week beginsH
When they stray in the wayK
Of the BOYS OF '-
-
If a jolly set is trollingA
The last Der Freischutz airsH
Or a 'cannon bullet' rollingA
Comes bouncing down the stairsH
The tutors looking outL
Sigh 'Alas there is no doubtL
'T is the noise of the BoysH
Of the CLASS OF ' '-
-
Four happy years togetherM
By storm and sunshine triedN
In changing wind and weatherM
They rough it side by sideN
Till they hear their Mother cryC
'You are fledged and you must fly '-
And the bell tolls the knellO
Of the days of '-
-
Since then in peace or troubleP
Full many a year has rolledQ
And life has counted doubleP
The days that then we toldQ
Yet we'll end as we've begunR
For though scattered we are oneR
While each year sees us hereS
Round the board of '-
-
Though fate may throw between usH
The mountains or the seaH
No time shall ever wean usH
No distance set us freeH
But around the yearly boardT
When the flaming pledge is pouredT
It shall claim every nameU
On the roll of '-
-
To yonder peaceful oceanR
That glows with sunset firesH
Shall reach the warm emotionR
This welcome day inspiresH
Beyond the ridges coldQ
Where a brother toils for goldQ
Till it shine through the mineD
Round the Boy of '-
-
If one whom fate has brokenR
Shall lift a moistened eyeC
We'll say before he 's spokenR
'Old Classmate don't you cryC
Here take the purse I holdQ
There 's a tear upon the goldQ
It was mine it is thineD
A'n't we BOYS OF ' '-
-
As nearer still and nearerM
The fatal stars appearV
The living shall be dearerM
With each encircling yearV
Till a few old men shall sayK
'We remember 't is the dayK
Let it pass with a glassH
For the CLASS OF ' '-
-
As one by one is fallingA
Beneath the leaves or snowsH
Each memory still recallingA
The broken ring shall closeH
Till the nightwinds softly passH
O'er the green and growing grassH
Where it waves on the gravesH
Of the BOYS OF '-
