A Portrait Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC DDEEFFGG

Thoughtful in youth but not austere in ageA
Calm but not cold and cheerful though a sageA
Too true to flatter and too kind to sneerB
And only just when seemingly severeB
So gently blending courtesy and artC
That wisdom s lips seemed borrowing friendship s heartC
-
Taught by the sorrows that his age had knownD
In others trials to forget his ownD
As hour by hour his lengthened day declinedE
A sweeter radiance lingered o er his mindE
Cold were the lips that spoke his early praiseF
And hushed the voices of his morning daysF
Yet the same accents dwelt on every tongueG
And love renewing kept him ever youngG
