How the mountains talked togetherA
Looking down upon the weatherA
When they heard our friend had planned hisB
Little trip among the AndesC
How they'll bare their snowy scalpsD
To the climber of the AlpsD
When the cry goes through their passesE
Here comes the great AgassizB
Yes I'm tall says ChimborazoB
But I wait for him to say soB
That's the only thing that lacks heF
Must see me CotopaxiB
Ay ay the fire peak thundersB
And he must view my wondersB
I'm but a lonely craterA
Till I have him for spectatorA
The mountain hearts are yearningG
The lava torches burningG
The rivers bend to meet himH
The forests bow to greet himH
It thrills the spinal columnI
Of fossil fishes solemnI
And glaciers crawl the fasterA
To the feet of their old masterA
Heaven keep him well and heartyF
Both him and all his partyF
From the sun that broils and smitesB
From the centipede that bitesB
From the hail storm and the thunderA
From the vampire and the condorA
From the gust upon the riverA
From the sudden earthquake shiverA
From the trip of mule or donkeyF
From the midnight howling monkeyF
From the stroke of knife or daggerA
From the puma and the jaguarJ
From the horrid boa constrictorA
That has scared us in the pictureA
From the Indians of the PampasB
Who would dine upon their grampasB
From every beast and verminK
That to think of sets us squirmin'K
From every snake that tries onK
The traveller his p'isonK
From every pest of Natur'A
Likewise the alligatorA
And from two things left behind himH
Be sure they'll try to find himH
The tax bill and assessorA
Heaven keep the great ProfessorA
May he find with his apostlesB
That the land is full of fossilsB
That the waters swarm with fishesB
Shaped according to his wishesB
That every pool is fertileL
In fancy kinds of turtleL
New birds around him singingG
New insects never stingingG
With a million novel dataM
About the articulataM
And facts that strip off all husksB
From the history of mollusksB
-
And when with loud Te DeumH
He returns to his MuseumH
May he find the monstrous reptileN
That so long the land has kept illO
By Grant and Sherman throttledM
And by Father Abraham bottledM
All specked and streaked and mottledM
With the scars of murderous battlesB
Where he clashed the iron rattlesB
That gods and men he shook atM
For all the world to look atM
God bless the great ProfessorA
And Madam too God bless herA
Bless him and all his bandM
On the sea and on the landM
Bless them head and heart and handM
Till their glorious raid is o'erA
And they touch our ransomed shoreA
Then the welcome of a nationK
With its shout of exultationK
Shall awake the dumb creationK
And the shapes of buried aeonsB
Join the living creature's paeansB
Till the fossil echoes roarA
While the mighty megalosaurusB
Leads the palaeozoic chorusB
God bless the great ProfessorA
And the land his proud possessorA
Bless them now and evermoreA
