Well I recall how first I metA
Mark Twain an infant barely threeB
Rolling a tiny cigaretteA
While cooing on his nurse's kneeB
-
Since then in every sort of placeC
I've met with Mark and heard him jokeD
Yet how can I describe his faceC
I never saw it for the smokeD
-
At school he won a smokershipE
At Harvard College Cambridge MassF
His name was soon on every lipE
They made him smoker of his classF
-
Who will forget his smoking boutG
With Mount Vesuvius our cheersH
When Mount Vesuvius went outG
And didn't smoke again for yearsH
-
The news was flashed to England's KingI
Who begged Mark Twain to come and stayJ
Offered him dukedoms anythingI
To smoke the London fog awayJ
-
But Mark was firm I bow said heB
To no imperial commandK
No ducal coronet for meB
My smoke is for my native landK
For Mark there waits a brighter crownL
When Peter comes his card to readM
He'll take the sign No Smoking downL
Then Heaven will be Heaven indeedN
