The Village Schoolmaster Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFFFCCGHII FFCCFFBeside yon straggling fence that skirts the way | A |
With blossom'd furze unprofitably gay | A |
There in his noisy mansion skill'd to rule | B |
The village master taught his little school | B |
A man severe he was and stern to view | C |
I knew him well and every truant knew | C |
Well had the boding tremblers learn'd to trace | D |
The days disasters in his morning face | D |
Full well they laugh'd with counterfeited glee | E |
At all his jokes for many a joke had he | E |
Full well the busy whisper circling round | F |
Convey'd the dismal tidings when he frown'd | F |
Yet he was kind or if severe in aught | F |
The love he bore to learning was in fault | F |
The village all declar'd how much he knew | C |
'Twas certain he could write and cipher too | C |
Lands he could measure terms and tides presage | G |
And e'en the story ran that he could gauge | H |
In arguing too the parson own'd his skill | I |
For e'en though vanquish'd he could argue still | I |
While words of learned length and thund'ring sound | F |
Amazed the gazing rustics rang'd around | F |
And still they gaz'd and still the wonder grew | C |
That one small head could carry all he knew | C |
But past is all his fame The very spot | F |
Where many a time he triumph'd is forgot | F |
