WHAT no way left to shun th' inglorious stage | B |
And save from infamy my sinking age | B |
Scarce half alive oppress'd with many a year | C |
What in the name of dotage drives me here | D |
A time there was when glory was my guide | E |
Nor force nor fraud could turn my steps aside | E |
Unaw'd by pow'r and unappall'd by fear | C |
With honest thrift I held my honour dear | C |
But this vile hour disperses all my store | F |
And all my hoard of honour is no more | F |
For ah too partial to my life's decline | G |
Caesar persuades submission must be mine | G |
Him I obey whom heaven itself obeys | A |
Hopeless of pleasing yet inclin'd to please | A |
Here then at once I welcome every shame | H |
And cancel at threescore a life of fame | H |
No more my titles shall my children tell | I |
The old buffoon will fit my name as well | I |
This day beyond its term my fate extends | A |
For life is ended when our honour ends | A |
