Rhyme Scheme: A BBCDEECCFFGGAAHHIIAA

PRESERVED BY MACROBIUSA

WHAT no way left to shun th' inglorious stageB
And save from infamy my sinking ageB
Scarce half alive oppress'd with many a yearC
What in the name of dotage drives me hereD
A time there was when glory was my guideE
Nor force nor fraud could turn my steps asideE
Unaw'd by pow'r and unappall'd by fearC
With honest thrift I held my honour dearC
But this vile hour disperses all my storeF
And all my hoard of honour is no moreF
For ah too partial to my life's declineG
Caesar persuades submission must be mineG
Him I obey whom heaven itself obeysA
Hopeless of pleasing yet inclin'd to pleaseA
Here then at once I welcome every shameH
And cancel at threescore a life of fameH
No more my titles shall my children tellI
The old buffoon will fit my name as wellI
This day beyond its term my fate extendsA
For life is ended when our honour endsA
