Rhyme Scheme: A BBCDEECCFFGGAAHHIIAA| PRESERVED BY MACROBIUS | A |

| - | |
| WHAT no way left to shun th' inglorious stage | B |
| And save from infamy my sinking age | B |
| Scarce half alive oppress'd with many a year | C |
| What in the name of dotage drives me here | D |
| A time there was when glory was my guide | E |
| Nor force nor fraud could turn my steps aside | E |
| Unaw'd by pow'r and unappall'd by fear | C |
| With honest thrift I held my honour dear | C |
| But this vile hour disperses all my store | F |
| And all my hoard of honour is no more | F |
| For ah too partial to my life's decline | G |
| Caesar persuades submission must be mine | G |
| Him I obey whom heaven itself obeys | A |
| Hopeless of pleasing yet inclin'd to please | A |
| Here then at once I welcome every shame | H |
| And cancel at threescore a life of fame | H |
| No more my titles shall my children tell | I |
| The old buffoon will fit my name as well | I |
| This day beyond its term my fate extends | A |
| For life is ended when our honour ends | A |
