Prologue To 'zobeide' Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCDDEEFFGDAAHIJJJK IKFILIIJJFFFFFFFJJII JJMM

IN these bold times when Learning's sons exploreA
The distant climate and the savage shoreA
When wise Astronomers to India steerB
And quit for Venus many a brighter hereC
While Botanists all cold to smiles and dimplingD
Forsake the fair and patiently go simplingD
When every bosom swells with wond'rous scenesE
Priests cannibals and hoity toity queensE
Our bard into the general spirit entersF
And fits his little frigate for adventuresF
With Scythian stores and trinkets deeply ladenG
He this way steers his course in hopes of tradingD
Yet ere he lands he 'as ordered me beforeA
To make an observation on the shoreA
Where are we driven our reck'ning sure is lostH
This seems a barren and a dangerous coastI
what a sultry climate am I underJ
Yon ill foreboding cloud seems big with thunderJ
'Upper Gallery'J
There Mangroves spread and larger than I've seen 'emK
'Pit'I
Here trees of stately size and turtles in 'emK
'Balconies'F
Here ill condition'd oranges aboundI
'Stage'L
And apples 'takes up one and tastes it'I
bitter apples strew the groundI
The place is uninhabited I fearJ
I heard a hissing there are serpents hereJ
O there the natives are a dreadful raceF
The men have tails the women paint the faceF
No doubt they're all barbarians Yes 'tis soF
I'll try to make palaver with them thoughF
'Making signs'F
'Tis best however keeping at a distanceF
Good Savages our Captain craves assistanceF
Our ship's well stor'd in yonder creek we've laid herJ
His honour is no mercenary traderJ
This is his first adventure lend him aidI
Or you may chance to spoil a thriving tradeI
His goods he hopes are prime and brought from farJ
Equally fit for gallantry and warJ
What no reply to promises so ampleM
I'd best step back and order up a sampleM
