When the moon is born in the eastA
And the white rooftops drift asleepB
Under the heaped up lightC
People leave their shops and march forth in groupsD
To meet the moonE
Carrying bread and a radio to the mountaintopsF
And their narcoticsG
There they buy and sell fantasiesH
And imagesI
And die as the moon comes to lifeJ
What does that luminous discK
Do to my homelandL
The land of the prophetsM
The land of the simpleN
The chewers of tobacco the dealers in drugO
What does the moon do to usP
That we squander our valorQ
And live only to beg from HeavenR
What has the heavenR
For the lazy and the weakS
When the moon comes to life they are changed toT
corpsesI
And shake the tombs of the saintsU
Hoping to be granted some rice some childrenR
They spread out their fine and elegant rugsV
And console themselves with an opium we call fateW
And destinyX
In my land the land of the simpleN
What weakness and decayY
Lay hold of us when the light streams forthZ
Rugs thousands of basketsM
Glasses of tea and children swarn over the hillsA2
In my landL
where the simple weepB
And live in the light they cannot perceiveB2
In my landL
Where people live without eyesC2
And prayY
And fornicateL
And live in resignationR
As they always haveD2
Calling on the crescent moonE
' O Crescent MoonE
O suspended God of MarbleN
O unbelievable objectL
Always you have been for the east for usP
A cluster of diamondsE2
For the millions whose senses are numbed'L
-
On those eastern nights whenF2
The moon waxes fullG2
The east divests itself of all honorQ
And vigorQ
The millions who go barefootL
Who believe in four wivesH2
And the day of judgmentL
The millions who encounter breadL
Only in their dreamsI2
Who spend the night in housesI
Built of coughsJ2
Who have never set eyes on medicineR
Fall down like corpses beneath the lightL
-
In my landL
where the stupid weepB
And die weepingK2
Whenever the crescent moon appearsL2
And their tears increaseM2
Whenever some wretched lute moves themN2
or the song to 'night'L
In my landL
In the land of the simpleN
where we slowly chew on our unending songsO2
A form of consumption destroying the eastL
Our east chewing on its historyX
its lethargic dreamsI2
Its empty legendsE2
Our east that sees the sum of all heroismP2
