I know of a landA
Where hair does not grey and where time s rule is bannedA
Where sun does not burn and where wave does not ringB
Where autumn embraces the blossoming springB
Where morning and evening unceasingly danceC
In noon s brightest glanceC
-
Oh wonderful landA
Where glass does not run full of tear drops as sandA
Where nothing is wanting that s worth holding dearD
Where that does not lack which so pained us back hereE
With breast filled with longing we seek ever moreF
Your sweet smiling shoreF
-
Oh long promised landA
We greet you in morning hour s mirror clear strandA
When perfect your shadow the child may espyG
And dreams that in green woods is where you must lieH
Where too it can share with the rushes and flowersI
Its smile and its hoursI
-
Oh transient dreamJ
Of island eternal in time s rushing streamJ
Of joy s sacred temple in life s vale of tearsK
Of life half divine in this hall s mortal yearsL
The land of the living with you melts awayM
From those made of clayM
-
Oh hope dashing dreamJ
You glittering bubble on time s rushing streamJ
In vain would the poet with voice and with penN
From bright gleaming shadows create you againN
Where shadow comes closest the small will all weepO
Who on it gaze deepO
-
Oh spell binding dreamJ
Of pearl that s eternal in time s rushing streamJ
You fool those poor persons who all seek in vainP
In image and art what the heart would retainP
And make them call lasting what just disappearsL
Like days months and yearsL
-
Oh spirit of loveQ
Your hand let me kiss reaching down from aboveQ
From heaven s fair skies to this earth s murky holdR
And touching our eyes with its fingers of goldR
So blue tinged there climbs behind surf roaring strandA
The wonderful landA
-
Oh heavenly nameS
Whose sacred embrace does our nature inflameS
So spirit can mingle with dust without griefT
And bring back to life every dead withered leafT
Oh deep in my clay let me fall on my kneeG
So God may see meG
-
Oh faith beyond blissU
Whose high vaulted bridge spans the gaping abyssU
When drifting ice threatens in surf roaring strandA
From poor mortal dwelling to far promised landA
Come farther down to me you high honoured guestV
That pleases you bestV
-
Oh hope fleet of wingB
Oh brother reborn through divine christeningB
For all journeys made to the land o er the seaG
Good tidings and comfort you ve lavished on meG
May I ever thank you so joy is in storeF
When hope is no moreF
-
Oh love perfect loveQ
Quiet source of fierce torrents that mightily moveW
He calls you his father who ransoms our plightX
Your spirit all soul s vital force does igniteX
Your kingdom is there where man death does defyH
May us it be nighH
-
Our father sublimeY
You willingly reign in earth s temple of grimeY
Who builds up the spirit in Jesu s sweet nameS
In human embrace with an altar aflameS
With heaven bright dwelling of faith dearly wonZ
For you and your sonZ
-
Oh Christian faith sweetA2
You grant every heart what the world cannot greetA2
What barely we glimpse while our eye is still blueB2
Is living within us we know this is trueB2
Both heaven and earth are my land life confidesC2
Where love e er residesC2
