Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDB EBEBFB GHGIJH KBKBLB MNMNOP QBRBCB STSTUT VWVWXW CBCBYB ZHZHA2H HBHBB2B HBHBC2B HEHED2EThe bright blessed day with joy we see | A |
Rise out of the sea at dawning | B |
It lightens the sky unceasingly | C |
Our gain and delight adorning | B |
As children of light we sense that soon | D |
Dark night will give way to morning | B |
- | |
Our Lord chose the blessed midnight hour | E |
To come down without our knowing | B |
Then clear in the east in dawn s pale bower | E |
The sun s hues in strength were growing | B |
Then light filled the sky in which the earth | F |
Shall shimmer with inner glowing | B |
- | |
Were each forest tree to come alive | G |
And each leaf a voice be granted | H |
The law of God s mercy they d contrive | G |
In vain in words to have chanted | I |
Since Life s Light now shines for ever more | J |
In old and young firmly planted | H |
- | |
Yea though every blade of grass could speak | K |
In meadow or field or clearing | B |
A thanksgiving hymn they could not seek | K |
To sing for our human hearing | B |
Befitting the day for light and life | L |
While eons their course are steering | B |
- | |
In vain would the weak man try who chose | M |
To conquer the mountain summit | N |
The eagle is wily though and knows | M |
The wind will not let it plummet | N |
And even the small blithe lark can brave | O |
The sky and yet overcome it | P |
- | |
The river so brash with thund rous noise | Q |
From crag face comes downwards crashing | B |
The streams down below have no such voice | R |
Though murmur with gentle plashing | B |
So gently they wind through grassy lea | C |
Up under the lime trees splashing | B |
- | |
So thank we our God our father good | S |
As larks in their dawn time chorus | T |
For each day he gave as so we should | S |
For life he from death won for us | T |
For all that has nurtured human souls | U |
For thousands of years before us | T |
- | |
As long as we see the golden day | V |
And woods are the Danes own bowers | W |
We ll deck every pew with sprigs of may | V |
And forefathers graves with flowers | W |
A wonderful feast of life and joy | X |
A Whitsuntide gift that s ours | W |
- | |
And then from our eyes will start to flow | C |
Mild tears like a stream now thriving | B |
And streams join and to a river grow | C |
That fain for Life s Source is striving | B |
It secretly gains like some deep sigh | Y |
So early yet late arriving | B |
- | |
And no day can have so long a growth | Z |
That evening cannot be sighted | H |
Its light and its setting sun are both | Z |
What God in his church has lighted | H |
But ever again it dawns anew | A2 |
For hearts who in morn delighted | H |
- | |
Let day gently glide this Whitsuntide | H |
With haloing rays full flashing | B |
The hours pleasing God as past they slide | H |
As meadowland stream soft plashing | B |
So joyously now the last one winds | B2 |
Up under the lime trees splashing | B |
- | |
Like gold is the dawn just moments old | H |
When day from its death is rising | B |
Yet we too are kissed with lips of gold | H |
By sunset so sweet enticing | B |
Then every dull gaze will glint afresh | C2 |
Pale cheeks with new blush surprising | B |
- | |
We ll journey then to our fatherland | H |
Where no day lies still thereafter | E |
Where stands a strong castle proud and grand | H |
Whose halls all resound with laughter | E |
And there we will talk till time is done | D2 |
In light with our friends hereafter | E |
