Come little babe come silly soulA
Thy father's shame thy mother's griefB
Born as I doubt to all our doleA
And to thyself unhappy chiefB
Sing lullaby and lap it warmC
Poor soul that thinks no creature harmD
-
Thou little think'st and less dost knowE
The cause of this thy mother's moanF
Thou want'st the wit to wail her woeE
And I myself am all aloneF
Why dost thou weep why dost thou wailG
And knowest not yet what thou dost ailG
-
Come little wretch ah silly heartH
Mine only joy what can I moreI
If there be any wrong thy smartH
That may the destines imploreI
'Twas I I say against my willJ
I wail the time but be thou stillJ
-
And dost thou smile Oh thy sweet faceK
Would God himself he might thee seeL
No doubt thou wouldst soon purchase graceK
I know right well for thee and meL
But come to mother babe and playM
For father false is fled awayM
-
Sweet boy if it by fortune chanceN
Thy father home again to sendO
If death do strike me with his lanceN
Yet mayst thou me to him commendO
If any ask thy mother's nameP
Tell how by love she purchased blameP
-
Then will his gentle heart soon yieldQ
I know him of a noble mindR
Although a lion in the fieldQ
A lamb in town thou shalt him findR
Ask blessing babe be not afraidS
His sugared words hath me betrayedS
-
Then mayst thou joy and be right gladT
Although in woe I seem to moanF
Thy father is no rascal ladT
A noble youth of blood and boneF
His glancing looks if he once smileU
Right honest women may beguileU
-
Come little boy and rock asleepV
Sing lullaby and be thou stillJ
I that can do nought else but weepV
Will sit by thee and wail my fillJ
God bless my babe and lullabyW
From this thy father's qualityL
