A Shepherd's Dream Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCDEFEFGHGHIBIB JCJCKLKLMGMGNBOB

A silly shepherd lately satA
Among a flock of sheepB
Where musing long on this and thatA
At last he fell asleepB
And in the slumber as he layC
He gave a piteous groanD
He thought his sheep were run awayC
And he was left aloneD
He whoop'd he whistled and he call'dE
But not a sheep came near himF
Which made the shepherd sore appall'dE
To see that none would hear himF
But as the swain amaz d stoodG
In this most solemn veinH
Came Phyllida forth of the woodG
And stood before the swainH
Whom when the shepherd did beholdI
He straight began to weepB
And at the heart he grew a coldI
To think upon his sheepB
For well he knew where came the queenJ
The shepherd durst not stayC
And where that he durst not be seenJ
The sheep must needs awayC
To ask her if she saw his flockK
Might happen patience moveL
And have an answer with a mockK
That such demanders proveL
Yet for because he saw her comeM
Alone out of the woodG
He thought he would not stand as dumbM
When speech might do him goodG
And therefore falling on his kneesN
To ask but for his sheepB
He did awake and so did leeseO
The honour of his sleepB
