Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEFG HIJK LMNO LPIQ RSTU IHCHVW X W

Comrades if I don't live to see the dayA
I mean if I die before freedom comesB
take me awayA
and bury me in a village cemetery in AnatoliaC
-
The worker Osman whom Hassan Bey ordered shotD
can lie on one side of me and on the other sideE
the martyr Aysha who gave birth in the ryeF
and died inside of forty daysG
-
Tractors and songs can pass below the cemeteryH
in the dawn light new people the smell of burnt gasolineI
fields held in common water in canalsJ
no drought or fear of the policeK
-
Of course we won't hear those songsL
the dead lie stretched out undergroundM
and rot like black branchesN
deaf dumb and blind under the earthO
-
But I sang those songsL
before they were writtenP
I smelled the burnt gasolineI
before the blueprints for the tractors were drawnQ
-
As for my neighborsR
the worker Osman and the martyr AyshaS
they felt the great longing while aliveT
maybe without even knowing itU
-
Comrades if I die before that day I meanI
and it's looking more and more likelyH
bury me in a village cemetery in AnatoliaC
and if there's one handyH
a plane tree could stand at my headV
I wouldn't need a stone or anythingW
