Zacchaeus Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCBCDEDE FEFEGEGE HIHIJEJE KKKKLMLG LELLEKEK LLLL

Jesus entered and passed through Jericho LukeA
-
-
City of palms whose ancient nameB
Suggests a line of scarlet hueC
Type of thy glorious Guest who cameB
And passed with crowds thy borders throughC
Did aught foretell that on that dayD
The Lord of life would favor theeE
And centuries ring the novel wayD
A soul was made both glad and freeE
-
Zacchaeus knew that through thy gatesF
Came One he oft had longed to seeE
Alas how adverse were the fatesF
So dense the throng so small was heE
Considering he ran beforeG
And climbed into a wayside treeE
And ever since the sycamoreG
Is blended with his historyE
-
While peering eagerly belowH
Above the tumult of the townI
That soothing voice to mortal woeH
Bade him to hasten quickly downI
Come Jesus said I must abideJ
And tarry at thy house with theeE
Zacchaeus the honor swift appliedJ
And entertained him joyfullyE
-
The people frowned that Christ should dineK
With a rich sinner publicanK
Nor knew his act of grace would shineK
A star of hope to fallen manK
Zacchaeus assured his royal guestL
Lord half my goods I give the poorM
And if I falsely have opprestL
Fourfold I unto men restoreG
-
His listener reads the human heartL
And all its thoughts unerringlyE
Alone such wisdom can impartL
And judge of its sincerityL
Jesus received this sin sick soulE
Salvation to his house was givenK
And while time's cycles onward rollE
His faith and works will point toward heavenK
-
I came the Lord of glory saidL
Nor did he count the pain and costL
To feed the hungry soul with breadL
To seek and save that which was lostL
