O Misery of mine no otherA
In faithfulness can match with theeB
Thou more than friend and more than brotherA
The only thing that cares for meB
-
Where'er I turn are unkind facesC
And hate and treachery and guileD
Thou Mis'ry in all times and placesC
Dost greet me with thy pallid smileD
-
At birth I found thee waiting for meB
I knew thee in my cradle firstE
The same small eyes and dim watched o'er meB
The same dry bony fingers nursedE
-
And day by day when morning lightenedF
To school thou led'st me home did'st bringG
And thine were all the blooms that brightenedF
The chilly landscape of my springG
-
And thou my match and marriage mongerA
The marriage deed by thee was readH
The hands foretelling need and hungerA
Were laid in blessing on my headH
-
Thy love for me shall last unshakenI
No further proof I ask for whenJ
My hopes for aye were from me takenI
My Mis'ry thou wert with me thenJ
-
And still while sorrow's storm is breakingG
Above me and my head I bowK
The kindly and the unforsakingG
Oh Mis'ry thou art with me nowK
-
Ay still from out Fate's gloomy towersL
I see thee come to me againJ
With wreaths of everlasting flowersL
And songs funereal in thy trainM
-
And when life's curses rock me nightlyB
And hushed I lie in slumber's holdN
Thy sable form comes treading lightlyB
To wrap me in its garments foldN
-
Thy brother let me be and whollyB
Repay thee all I owe tho' lateO
My aching heart my melancholyB
My songs to thee I dedicateO
