Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CBCB DEDE FGFG HIHI JKLK MNMN OPOP QRQR

The wind is keen the frost is dreadA
Toward the icy waterB
By aunt and mother forth is ledA
The fisher's lovely daughterB
-
Dive in dive in my child with hasteC
There's naught whereon to ponderB
The time dear heart we must not wasteC
The sun has set out yonderB
-
God's mercy child is great and sureD
Fear not but He will show itE
Leap in leap out and you are pureD
'Tis over ere you know itE
-
The frost and cold with cruel knifeF
The tender form assailG
Ah would you be a Jewish wifeF
You must not weep and quailG
-
And in and out she leaps Once moreH
Poor girl it has not served youI
No purer are you than beforeH
A Gentile has observed youI
-
And into th' icy flood againJ
In terror wild she leapsK
The white limbs shudder all in vainL
The Christian still he peepsK
-
The frost and cold they burn and biteM
The women rub their fingersN
The lovely child grows white and whiteM
As on the bank she lingersN
-
The Law my child we must fulfillO
The scoundrel see departP
Yet once 'tis but a moment's chillO
'Tis but a trifling smartP
-
The white faced child the Law has keptQ
The covenant unstainedR
For in the waters deep she leaptQ
And there below remainedR
