When the world was first createdA
By th' all wise Eternal OneB
Asked he none for help or counselC
Simply spake and it was doneB
-
Made it for his own good pleasureD
Shaped it on his own designE
Spent a long day's work upon itF
Formed it fair and very fineE
-
Soon he thought on man's creationB
Then perplexities aroseG
So the Lord His winged SenateH
Called the question to proposeG
-
Hear my great ones why I called yeI
Hear and help me ye who canJ
Hear and tell me how I furtherD
Shall proceed in making manJ
-
Ponder well before ye answerD
And consider children dearK
In our image I would make himL
Free from stain from blemish clearK
-
Of my holy fire I'd give himL
Crowned monarch shall he beI
Ruling with a sway unquestionedM
Over earth and air and seaI
-
Birds across the blue sky wingingN
Swift shall fly before his faceO
Silver fishes in the oceanB
Savage lion in the chaseO
-
How This toy of froth and vaporD
Thought the Senate filled with fearK
If so wide his kingdom stretchesP
Shortly he will break in hereQ
-
So the Lord they answered sayingN
Mind and strength Thy creature giveR
Form him in our very imageS
Lord but wingless let him liveT
-
Lest he shame the soaring eagleC
Let no wings to man be giv'nB
Bid him o'er the earth be rulerD
Lord but keep him out of heav'nB
-
Wisely said the Lord made answerD
Lo your counsel fair I takeU
Yet my Senate one exceptionB
One alone I will to makeU
-
One exception for the poetH
For the singer shall have wingsV
He the gates of Heav'n shall enterD
Highest of created thingsV
-
One I single from among yeI
One to watch the ages longW
Promptly to admit the poetH
When he hears his holy songW
