I have a little boy at homeA
A pretty little sonB
I think sometimes the world is mineC
In him my only oneB
-
But seldom seldom do I seeD
My child in heaven's lightE
I find him always fast asleepF
I see him but at nightE
-
Ere dawn my labor drives me forthG
'Tis night when I am freeD
A stranger am I to my childH
And strange my child to meD
-
I come in darkness to my homeA
With weariness and payI
My pallid wife she waits to tellJ
The things he learned to sayI
-
How plain and prettily he askedK
Dear mamma when's 'Tonight'K
O when will come my dear papaL
And bring a penny brightK
-
I hear her words I hasten outK
This moment must it beD
The father love flames in my breastK
My child must look at meD
-
I stand beside the tiny cotK
And look and list and ahM
A dream thought moves the baby lipsN
O where is my papaL
-
I kiss and kiss the shut blue eyesO
I kiss them not in vainP
They open O they see me thenQ
And straightway close againQ
-
Here's your papa my precious oneB
A penny for you ahM
A dream still moves the baby lipsN
O where is my papaL
-
And I I think in bitternessR
And disappointment soreS
Some day you will awake my childK
To find me nevermoreS
