Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEDE FGFH IJIK LKLK MNMNNot always as you see us now | A |
Have we been used to weep and sigh | B |
We too have grasped the sword I trow | C |
And seen astonished foemen fly | B |
- | |
We too have rushed into the fray | D |
For our Belief the battle braved | E |
And through the spears have fought our way | D |
And high the flag of vict'ry waved | E |
- | |
But generations go and come | F |
And suns arise and set in tears | G |
And we are weakened now and dumb | F |
Foregone the might of ancient years | H |
- | |
In exile where the wicked reign | I |
Our courage and our pride expired | J |
But e'en today each throbbing vein | I |
With Asmonean blood is fired | K |
- | |
Tho' cruel hands with mighty flail | L |
Have threshed us yet we have not blenched | K |
The sea of blood could naught prevail | L |
That fire is burning still unquenched | K |
- | |
Our fall is great our fall is real | M |
You need but look on us to tell | N |
Yet in us lives the old Ideal | M |
Which all the nations shall not quell | N |
