Chanukah Thoughts Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEDE FGFH IJIK LKLK MNMN

Not always as you see us nowA
Have we been used to weep and sighB
We too have grasped the sword I trowC
And seen astonished foemen flyB
-
We too have rushed into the frayD
For our Belief the battle bravedE
And through the spears have fought our wayD
And high the flag of vict'ry wavedE
-
But generations go and comeF
And suns arise and set in tearsG
And we are weakened now and dumbF
Foregone the might of ancient yearsH
-
In exile where the wicked reignI
Our courage and our pride expiredJ
But e'en today each throbbing veinI
With Asmonean blood is firedK
-
Tho' cruel hands with mighty flailL
Have threshed us yet we have not blenchedK
The sea of blood could naught prevailL
That fire is burning still unquenchedK
-
Our fall is great our fall is realM
You need but look on us to tellN
Yet in us lives the old IdealM
Which all the nations shall not quellN
