There stands in th' leafless GhettoA
One spare leaved ancient treeB
Above the Ghetto noisesC
It moans eternallyB
-
In wonderment it musesD
And murmurs with a sighE
Alas how God forsakenF
And desolate am IE
-
Alas the stony alleysG
And noises loud and boldH
Where are ye birds of summerI
Where are ye woods of oldH
-
And where ye breezes balmyB
That wandered vagrant hereJ
And where oh sweep of heavensK
So deep and blue and clearL
-
Where are ye mighty giantsM
Ye come not riding byE
Upon your fiery horsesD
A whistling merrilyB
-
Of other days my dreamingN
Of other days ah meB
When sturdy hero racesD
Lived wild and glad and freeB
-
The old sun shone how brightlyB
The old lark sang what songO
O'er earth Desire and GladnessD
Reigned happily and longO
-
But see what are these ant hillsD
These ants that creep and crawlP
Bereft of man and natureI
My life is stripped of allP
-
And I an ancient orphanF
What do I here aloneQ
My friends have all departedR
My youth and glory goneS
-
Oh tear me root and branchesD
No longer let me beB
A living head stone broodingN
O'er the grave of libertyB
