The Poet's dead a slave to honorA
He fell by rumor slanderedB
Lead in his breast and thirsting for revengeC
Hanging his proud headD
The Poet's soul could not endureE
Petty insult's disgraceF
Against society he roseG
Alone as always and was slainH
Slain What use is weeping nowI
The futile chorus of empty praiseJ
Excuses mumbled full of pathosK
Fate has pronounced its sentenceL
Was it not you who spitefullyM
Rebuffed his free courageous giftN
And for your own amusement fannedO
The nearly dying flameP
Well now enjoy yourselves he couldn'tQ
Endure the final tortureA
Quenched is the marvelous light of geniusR
Withered is the triumphal wreathS
-
Cold bloodedly his murdererA
Took aim there was no chance of flightT
His empty heart beat evenlyM
The pistol steady in his handO
No wonder from far awayU
The will of fate sent him to usR
Like hundreds of his fellow vagrantsV
In search of luck and rankW
With impudence he mocked and scornedX
The tongue and mores of this strange landO
He could not spare our gloryM
Nor in that bloody moment knowY
quot gainst what he'd raised his handO
-
He's slain and taken by the graveZ
Like that unknown but happy bardA2
Victim of jealousy wildB2
Of whom he sang with wondrous powerA
Struck down like him by an unyielding handO
-
Why did he quit the blissful peace of simple fellowshipC2
To enter this society so envious and stiflingD2
To hearts of free and fiery passionE2
Why did he give his hand to worthless slanderersV
How could he have believed their hollow wordsV
And kindness he who'd ever understood his fellow manF2
-
And they removed his wreath and set upon his headD
A crown of thorns entwined in laurelM
The hidden spines were cruelM
And pierced his noble browI
Poisoned were his final momentsV
By sly insinuations of mockers ignorantQ
And thus he died for vengeance vainly thirstingD2
Secretly vexed by false hopes deceivedG2
The wondrous singing's ceasedH2
T'will never sound againI2
His refuge gloomy and smallM
His lips forever sealedJ2
-
-
And you the offspring arrogantQ
Of fathers known for maliceV
Crushing with slavish heels the ruinsV
Of clans aggrieved by fortune's gameP
You greedy hordes around the throneK2
Killers of Freedom Genius and GloryM
You hide beneath the canopy of lawM
Fall silent truth and justice before youL2
But justice also comes from God corruption's friendsV
The judge most terrible awaits youL2
He's hardened to the clink of goldM2
He knows your future thoughts and deedsV
Then will you turn in vain to liesV
They will no longer helpN2
And your black blood won't wash awayU
The poet's sacred bloodO2
