Through the rocks in wildest coursesA
Seethes the Terek grim of moodB
Tempest howling its bewailingC
Pearled with foam its tearful floodD
-
At the mountain's feet soft streamingC
Gentler grown its murmurs beE
And with greeting full of fawningC
Speaks to the Caspian SeaE
-
'Hospitable part thy billowsF
Give me room oh Ocean graveG
From a distance drawing thitherH
Scarce my weary currents waveG
-
Born upon the edge of KasbekC
By the breast of clouds renewedB
Hatred have I sworn to mankindI
Who with us the free make feudB
-
See by rage of my own furyH
Lies despoiled my Darjal homeJ
And as playthings for thy childrenK
Pebbles bearing now I come '-
-
Yet upon her strands a'dreamingC
Mute the grey Sea did remainL
And the Terek silver foamingC
Spoke caressingly againM
-
'Grey Sea I would serve thee onlyH
Have a present borne to dayN
See 'tis a young CarabineerH
Who has fallen in the frayH
-
How his coat of mail is gleamingC
Silver on the billows' spanO
Golden on his trappings shiningC
Blessing of the AlcoranO
-
Menacing the one who slew himP
Scowls the brow's relentless feudB
By his noble life blood crimsonedB
O'er his lips his hair is gluedB
-
Through the half closed eyelids glancingC
Still the lust of quarrel mocksQ
From his head deep underneath himP
Flow the matted raven locks '-
-
Motionless upon her beachesA
Did the grey Sea still remainO
And the Terek foaming yellowR
In displeasure spoke againO
-
'So then take him as a presentB
As I nothing fairer knowR
On this round earth for thee onlyH
This rare prize I've guarded soR
-
'Tis a mountain Cossack's bodyH
Wafted 'mid my billows' danceS
See his hair no silk is softerH
See his shoulder's gold expanseS
-
See how o'er his red lips speechlessT
Now the seated eyes find restB
Trickling yet the purple life bloodB
From the small wound on his breastB
-
For a young and holy maidenO
Weeps lamenting every heartB
One sole Cossack in the villageU
In this mourning takes no partB
-
From the confines of his countryH
Rode he forth with boding greyH
'Neath the dagger of the TscherkesT
He has breathed his soul away '-
-
And the Terek paused behold nowO
In the gleaming foam flood drownedB
Silvered in the spraying billowsT
Dips a head with rushes crownedB
-
And the hoary one's lips whisperH
Haughty words of youthful fireH
And the eyes lit with love lustreH
Flame with passionate desireH
-
Foaming rushing on swift longingC
Seethed he up in youthful zestB
And the Terek flood was weddedB
With him in embraces blestB
