Once 'mid group of native mountainsA
Hot dispute aroseB
Elbrus angry did with KasbekC
Argument proposeB
'Now beware ' the hoary ElbrusD
Warning did exclaimE
'To enslave thee and enthrall theeF
Is man's evil aimE
Smoking huts he will be buildingC
On thy mountain sideG
Loudly through thy clefts resoundingC
Ring his hatchet wideG
The swift swinging iron shovelH
Breast of stone will partI
Of thy bronze and stone will rob theeF
Pierce thee to the heartI
Caravans e'en now are passingC
Through thy rocks afarJ
Where before the fogs were swimmingC
And the Eagle TsarJ
Ah mankind is bold and fearlessD
Dreads no lifted handK
Guard thee populous and mightyF
Is the morning land 'L
'Threatens me the East ' then queriedM
Kasbek with disdainN
'There eight centuries alreadyF
Sleeping man has lainN
See in shadow the GrusineN
Gloats in lustful greedM
On his many coloured raimentM
Glints the winey beadM
Drugged with fumes of his nargilehH
Dreams the MussulmanN
By the fountains on his divanN
Slumbers TeheranN
See Jerusalem is lyingC
At his feet o'erthrownN
Deathly dumb and lifeless staringC
As an earthly tombO
And beyond the Nile is washingC
O'er the burning stepsP
Of the Kingly mausoleumsP
Yellow shadowlessP
In his tent the hunt forgottenN
Now the Bedouin liesP
Sings the old ancestral legendsP
Scans the starry skiesP
See far as the eye can ventureQ
All sleeps as beforeR
No the threat of dreaming OrientM
Frights me nevermore 'L
'Laugh thou not too early Kasbek 'L
Elbrus did persistM
'Look What vast mass is it turningC
Northward through the mist 'L
Secretly the heart of KasbekC
Faltered as amazedM
Silent and with dark forebodingC
To the North he gazedM
Full of woe stared in the distanceP
What a thronging swarmS
Hark there rings the clash of weaponsP
Battle cry alarmT
From the Don unto the UralH
What a human seaP
Regiments that wave and glitterQ
Past all counting beP
Feathers white like sedge of oceanN
Waving in a gustM
Many coloured Uhlans stormingC
Through the blowing dustM
The imperial battalionsP
Densely packed proceedM
Trumpets flaring banners flyingC
In the victor's leadM
Batteries with brasses rattlingC
Conquering advanceP
With their blood red splendor flashingC
Cannon matches glanceP
And a battle proved commanderQ
Leads the army thereU
From whose eyes the lightning flashesP
'Neath his snowy hairU
Swells the host until as Griesbach'sP
Billows roaring loudM
From the Eastward nears the armyP
As a thunder cloudM
Kasbek peered with sinister bodingC
Through the clouds would fainN
Count his enemies approachingC
Found it was in vainN
Threw one glance unto the mountainsP
Anguished overcomeV
O'er his brow drew close the vapoursP
Was forever dumbV
