Sonnet Xii: That Learned Father Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCCBDEEDFGHFDD

To the SoulA
-
That learned Father who so firmly provesB
The Soul of man immortal and divineC
And doth the several offices defineC
Anima Gives her that name as she the Body movesB
Amor Then is she Love embracing charityD
Animus Moving a Will in us it is the MindE
Mens Retaining knowledge still the same in kindE
Memoria As intellectual it is MemoryD
Ratio In judging Reason only is her nameF
Sensus In speedy apprehension it is SenseG
Conscientia In right or wrong they call her ConscienceH
Spiritus The Spirit when it to Godward doth inflameF
These of the Soul the several functions beD
Which my Heart lighten'd by thy love doth seeD
