His Defence Against The Idle Critick Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCCD EFGHHG HHIJJI CCKCCK LLMNNO PPQQQQ RRISSI TTUHHU

The Ryme nor marres nor makesA
Nor addeth it nor takesA
From that which we proposeB
Things imaginarieC
Doe so strangely varieC
That quickly we them loseD
-
And what 's quickly begotE
As soone againe is notF
This doe I truely knowG
Yea and what 's borne with paineH
That Sense doth long'st retaineH
Gone with a greater FlowG
-
Yet this Critick so sterneH
But whom none must discerneH
Nor perfectly haue seeingI
Strangely layes about himJ
As nothing without himJ
Were worthy of beingI
-
That I my selfe betrayC
To that most publique wayC
Where the Worlds old BawdK
Custome that doth humorC
And by idle rumorC
Her Dotages applaudK
-
That whilst he still prefersL
Those that be wholly hersL
Madnesse and IgnoranceM
I creepe behind the TimeN
From spertling with their CrimeN
And glad too with my ChanceO
-
O wretched World the whileP
When the euill most vileP
Beareth the fayrest faceQ
And inconstant lightnesseQ
With a scornefull slightnesseQ
The best Things doth disgraceQ
-
Whilst this strange knowing BeastR
Man of himselfe the leastR
His Enuie declaringI
Makes Vertue to descendS
Her title to defendS
Against him much preparingI
-
Yet these me not deludeT
Nor from my place extrudeT
By their resolued HateU
Their vilenesse that doe knowH
Which to my selfe I showH
To keepe aboue my FateU
