Sleep Of The Body The Soul's Awakening Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEAFEGHIDJKLHLLJM ML

Every night Thou freest our spirits from the bodyA
And its snare making them pure as rased tabletsB
Every night spirits are released from this cageC
And set free neither lording it nor lorded overD
At night prisoners are unaware of their prisonE
At night kings are unaware of their majestyA
Then there is no thought or care for loss or gainF
No regard to such an one or such an oneE
The state of the 'Knower' is such as this even when awakeG
God says 'Thou wouldst deem him awake though asleepH
Sleeping to the affairs of the world day and nightI
Like a pen in the directing hand of the writerD
He who sees not the hand which effects the writingJ
Fancies the effect proceeds from the motion of the penK
If the 'Knower' revealed the particulars of this stateL
'Twould rob the vulgar of their sensual sleepH
His soul wanders in the desert that has no similitudeL
Like his body his spirit is enjoying perfect restL
Freed from desire of eating and drinkingJ
Like a bird escaped from cage and snareM
But when he is again beguiled into the snareM
He cries for help to the AlmightyL
