The Church Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCABCAD DEDDEDDD FDDFDDFD GHDGHDGD IDDJDDJD

Upon the glistening leaden roofA
Of the new Pile the sunlight shinesB
The stream goes leaping byC
The hills are clothed with pines sun proofA
'Mid bright green fields below the pinesB
Stands the Church on highC
What Church is this from men aloofA
'Tis the Church of BrouD
-
At sunrise from their dewy lairD
Crossing the stream the kine are seenE
Round the wall to strayD
The churchyard wall that clips the squareD
Of open hill sward fresh and greenE
Where last year they layD
But all things now are order'd fairD
Round the Church of BrouD
-
On Sundays at the matin chimeF
The Alpine peasants two and threeD
Climb up here to prayD
Burghers and dames at summer's primeF
Ride out to church from ChamberyD
Dight with mantles gayD
But else it is a lonely timeF
Round the Church of BrouD
-
On Sundays too a priest doth comeG
From the wall'd town beyond the passH
Down the mountain wayD
And then you hear the organ's humG
You hear the white robed priest say massH
And the people prayD
But else the woods and fields are dumbG
Round the Church of BrouD
-
And after church when mass is doneI
The people to the nave repairD
Round the tomb to strayD
And marvel at the Forms of stoneJ
And praise the chisell'd broideries rareD
Then they drop awayD
The princely Pair are left aloneJ
In the Church of BrouD
