Self-deception Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEDF GHGH IAJA GKGL GMGM NONO

Say what blinds us that we claim the gloryA
Of possessing powers not our shareB
Since man woke on earth he knows his storyA
But before we woke on earth we wereC
-
Long long since undower'd yet our spiritD
Roam'd ere birth the treasuries of GodE
Saw the gifts the powers it might inheritD
Ask'd an outfit for its earthly roadF
-
Then as now this tremulous eager BeingG
Strain'd and long'd and grasp'd each gift it sawH
Then as now a Power beyond our seeingG
Stav'd us back and gave our choice the lawH
-
Ah whose hand that day through heaven guidedI
Man's blank spirit since it was not weA
Ah who sway'd our choice and who decidedJ
What our gifts and what our wants should beA
-
For alas he left us each retainingG
Shreds of gifts which he refus'd in fullK
Still these waste us with their hopeless strainingG
Still the attempt to use them proves them nullL
-
And on earth we wander groping reelingG
Powers stir in us stir and disappearM
Ah and he who placed our master feelingG
Fail'd to place our master feeling clearM
-
We but dream we have our wish'd for powersN
Ends we seek we never shall attainO
Ah some power exists there which is oursN
Some end is there we indeed may gainO
