Coldly sadly descendsA
The autumn evening The fieldB
Strewn with its dank yellow driftsC
Of wither'd leaves and the elmsD
Fade into dimness apaceE
Silent hardly a shoutF
From a few boys late at their playG
The lights come out in the streetH
In the school room windows but coldI
Solemn unlighted austereJ
Through the gathering darkness ariseK
The chapel walls in whose boundL
Thou my father art laidM
-
There thou dost lie in the gloomN
Of the autumn evening But ahO
That word gloom to my mindP
Brings thee back in the lightQ
Of thy radiant vigour againR
In the gloom of November we pass'dS
Days not dark at thy sideT
Seasons impair'd not the rayG
Of thy buoyant cheerfulness clearJ
Such thou wast and I standU
In the autumn evening and thinkV
Of bygone autumns with theeW
-
Fifteen years have gone roundL
Since thou arosest to treadX
In the summer morning the roadY
Of death at a call unforeseenZ
Sudden For fifteen yearsA2
We who till then in thy shadeM
Rested as under the boughsB2
Of a mighty oak have enduredC2
Sunshine and rain as we mightQ
Bare unshaded aloneD2
Lacking the shelter of theeW
-
O strong soul by what shoreE2
Tarriest thou now For that forceF2
Surely has not been left vainG2
Somewhere surely afarH2
In the sounding labour house vastS
Of being is practised that strengthI2
Zealous beneficent firmJ2
-
Yes in some far shining sphereJ
Conscious or not of the pastS
Still thou performest the wordK2
Of the Spirit in whom thou dost liveL2
Prompt unwearied as hereM2
Still thou upraisest with zealN2
The humble good from the groundL
Sternly repressest the badO2
Still like a trumpet dost rouseP2
Those who with half open eyesK
Tread the border land dimQ2
'Twixt vice and virtue reviv'stO2
Succourest this was thy workR2
This was thy life upon earthS2
-
What is the course of the lifeT2
Of mortal men on the earthS2
Most men eddy aboutO2
Here and there eat and drinkV
Chatter and love and hateO2
Gather and squander are raisedO2
Aloft are hurl'd in the dustO2
Striving blindly achievingU2
Nothing and then they dieO2
Perish and no one asksV2
Who or what they have beenW2
More than he asks what wavesX2
In the moonlit solitudes mildO2
Of the midmost Ocean have swell'dO2
Foam'd for a moment and goneY2
-
And there are some whom a thirstO2
Ardent unquenchable firesZ2
Not with the crowd to be spentO2
Not without aim to go roundO2
In an eddy of purposeless dustO2
Effort unmeaning and vainG2
Ah yes some of us striveL2
Not without action to dieO2
Fruitless but something to snatchA3
From dull oblivion nor allB3
Glut the devouring graveC3
We we have chosen our pathD3
Path to a clear purposed goalE3
Path of advance but it leadsF3
A long steep journey through sunkG3
Gorges o'er mountains in snowH3
Cheerful with friends we set forthI3
Then on the height comes the stormJ3
Thunder crashes from rockK3
To rock the cataracts replyO2
Lightnings dazzle our eyesK
Roaring torrents have breach'dO2
The track the stream bed descendsA
In the place where the wayfarer onceL3
Planted his footstep the sprayG
Boils o'er its borders aloftO2
The unseen snow beds dislodgeM3
Their hanging ruin alasN3
Havoc is made in our trainG2
Friends who set forth at our sideO2
Falter are lost in the stormJ3
We we only are leftO2
With frowning foreheads with lipsO3
Sternly compress'd we strain onP3
On and at nightfall at lastO2
Come to the end of our wayG
To the lonely inn 'mid the rocksQ3
Where the gaunt and taciturn hostO2
Stands on the threshold the windO2
Shaking his thin white hairsR3
Holds his lantern to scanS3
Our storm beat figures and asksV2
Whom in our party we bringU2
Whom we have left in the snowH3
Sadly we answer We bringU2
Only ourselves we lostO2
Sight of the rest in the stormJ3
Hardly ourselves we fought throughT3
Stripp'd without friends as we areH2
Friends companions and trainG2
The avalanche swept from our sideO2
-
But thou woulds't not aloneD2
Be saved my father aloneD2
Conquer and come to thy goalE3
Leaving the rest in the wildO2
We were weary and weW
Fearful and we in our marchU3
Fain to drop down and to dieO2
Still thou turnedst and stillV3
Beckonedst the trembler and stillV3
Gavest the weary thy handO2
-
If in the paths of the worldO2
Stones might have wounded thy feetO2
Toil or dejection have triedO2
Thy spirit of that we sawW3
Nothing to us thou wage stillV3
Cheerful and helpful and firmJ2
Therefore to thee it was givenX3
Many to save with thyselfC3
And at the end of thy dayG
O faithful shepherd to comeY3
Bringing thy sheep in thy handO2
-
And through thee I believeC3
In the noble and great who are goneY2
Pure souls honour'd and blestO2
By former ages who elseZ3
Such so soulless so poorA4
Is the race of men whom I seeW
Seem'd but a dream of the heartO2
Seem'd but a cry of desireB4
Yes I believe that there livedO2
Others like thee in the pastO2
Not like the men of the crowdO2
Who all round me to dayG
Bluster or cringe and make lifeC3
Hideous and arid and vileC4
But souls temper'd with fireB4
Fervent heroic and goodO2
Helpers and friends of mankindO2
Servants of God or sonsD4
Shall I not call you BecauseE4
Not as servants ye knewT3
Your Father's innermost mindO2
His who unwillingly seesF4
One of his little ones lostO2
Yours is the praise if mankindO2
Hath not as yet in its marchU3
Fainted and fallen and diedO2
-
See In the rocks of the worldO2
Marches the host of mankindO2
A feeble wavering lineG4
Where are they tending A GodO2
Marshall'd them gave them their goalE3
Ah but the way is so longH4
Years they have been in the wildO2
Sore thirst plagues them the rocksQ3
Rising all round overaweW
Factions divide them their hostO2
Threatens to break to dissolveC3
Ah keep keep them combinedO2
Else of the myriads who fillV3
That army not one shall arriveC3
Sole they shall stray in the rocksQ3
Stagger for ever in vainG2
Die one by one in the wasteO2
-
Then in such hour of needO2
Of your fainting dispirited raceE
Ye like angels appearJ
Radiant with ardour divineG4
Beacons of hope ye appearJ
Languor is not in your heartO2
Weakness is not in your wordO2
Weariness not on your browI4
Ye alight in our van at your voiceJ4
Panic despair flee awayW
Ye move through the ranks recallB3
The stragglers refresh the outwornG4
Praise re inspire the braveC3
Order courage returnG4
Eyes rekindling and prayersR3
Follow your steps as ye goH3
Ye fill up the gaps in our filesK4
Strengthen the wavering lineG4
Stablish continue our marchU3
On to the bound of the wasteO2
On to the City of GodO2
