Palladium Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHIH JKJK LMLM

Set where the upper streams of Simois flowA
Was the Palladium high 'mid rock and woodB
And Hector was in Ilium far belowA
And fought and saw it not but there it stoodB
-
It stood and sun and moonshine rain'd their lightC
On the pure columns of its glen built hallD
Backward and forward roll'd the waves of fightC
Round Troy but while this stood Troy could not fallD
-
So in its lovely moonlight lives the soulE
Mountains surround it and sweet virgin airF
Cold plashing past it crystal waters rollE
We visit it by moments ah too rareF
-
We shall renew the battle in the plainG
To morrow red with blood will Xanthus beH
Hector and Ajax will be there againI
Helen will come upon the wall to seeH
-
Then we shall rust in shade or shine in strifeJ
And fluctuate 'twixt blind hopes and blind despairsK
And fancy that we put forth all our lifeJ
And never know how with the soul it faresK
-
Still doth the soul from its lone fastness highL
Upon our life a ruling effluence sendM
And when it fails fight as we will we dieL
And while it lasts we cannot wholly endM
