Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHIH JKJK LMLMSet where the upper streams of Simois flow | A |
Was the Palladium high 'mid rock and wood | B |
And Hector was in Ilium far below | A |
And fought and saw it not but there it stood | B |
- | |
It stood and sun and moonshine rain'd their light | C |
On the pure columns of its glen built hall | D |
Backward and forward roll'd the waves of fight | C |
Round Troy but while this stood Troy could not fall | D |
- | |
So in its lovely moonlight lives the soul | E |
Mountains surround it and sweet virgin air | F |
Cold plashing past it crystal waters roll | E |
We visit it by moments ah too rare | F |
- | |
We shall renew the battle in the plain | G |
To morrow red with blood will Xanthus be | H |
Hector and Ajax will be there again | I |
Helen will come upon the wall to see | H |
- | |
Then we shall rust in shade or shine in strife | J |
And fluctuate 'twixt blind hopes and blind despairs | K |
And fancy that we put forth all our life | J |
And never know how with the soul it fares | K |
- | |
Still doth the soul from its lone fastness high | L |
Upon our life a ruling effluence send | M |
And when it fails fight as we will we die | L |
And while it lasts we cannot wholly end | M |
