CALLICLES front belowA
-
-
Through the black rushing smoke burstsB
Thick breaks the red flameC
All Etna heaves fiercelyD
Her forest cloth'd frameC
-
Not here O ApolloA
Are haunts meet for theeD
But where Helicon breaks downE
In cliff to the seaD
-
Where the moon silver'd inletsF
Send far their light voiceG
Up the still vale of ThisbeH
O speed and rejoiceG
-
On the sward at the cliff topI
Lie strewn the white flocksJ
On the cliff side the pigeonsK
Roost deep in the rocksJ
-
In the moonlight the shepherdsL
Soft lull'd by the rillsL
Lie wrapt in their blanketsL
Asleep on the hillsL
-
What forms are these comingM
So white through the gloom '-
What garments out glisteningM
The gold flower'd broomN
-
What sweet breathing presenceL
Out perfumes the thymeO
What voices enraptureP
The night's balmy primeO
-
'Tis Apollo comes leadingM
His choir the NineQ
The leader is fairestR
But all are divineQ
-
They are lost in the hollowsL
They stream up againS
What seeks on this mountainT
The glorified trainU
-
They bathe on this mountainT
In the spring by their roadV
Then on to OlympusL
Their endless abodeV
-
Whose praise do they mentionT
Of what is it toldW
What will be for everP
What was from of oldW
-
First hymn they the FatherP
Of all things and thenS
The rest of immortalsL
The action of menS
-
The day in his hotnessL
The strife with the palmX
The night in her silenceL
The stars in their calmX
