When called upon to do some thingA
For God or fellow manB
I always find a good excuseC
To back out if I canB
I can t get up in front of folksD
And pray or testifyE
And I know someone else can helpF
My neighbor more than IE
I can t talk in front of peopleG
And Lord knows I can t singA
And when you come right down to itH
I can t do anythingA
So I get up and go to churchI
When Sunday morning comesJ
And I feel like by doing thisK
My Christian duty s doneL
-
And now I stand with all mankindM
Before the great white throneN
To be rewarded for good worksO
But what if I have noneL
I see some folks placed on God s leftP
And some placed on His rightQ
I start to feel uncomfortableG
And then I m filled with frightQ
I find that I can speak up nowR
Before this multitudeS
I can pray and testifyE
And plead and beg some tooT
Lord you know I ve not done muchU
You know I ve been no saintV
But Lord please place me on your rightQ
And He replies I can tW

Poet's note: This poem was written about 1973 when someone in our small women’s church group suggested that we all write a poem for our next monthly meeting. It simply came from my heart and expressed my own personal feelings of inadequateness. It caused me to take stock and attempt to do some things that I would never have had the courage to do before I wrote this poem.
