When called upon to do some thing
For God or fellow man
I always find a good excuse
To back out if I can.
I can’t get up in front of folks
And pray or testify,
And I know someone else can help
My neighbor more than I.
I can’t talk in front of people,
And Lord knows I can’t sing,
And when you come right down to it
I can’t do anything.
So I get up and go to church
When Sunday morning comes,
And I feel like by doing this
My Christian duty’s done.
And now I stand with all mankind
Before the great white throne
To be rewarded for good works;
But what if I have none?
I see some folks placed on God’s left
And some placed on His right,
I start to feel uncomfortable
And then I’m filled with fright.
I find that I can speak up now
Before this multitude,
I can pray and testify,
And plead and beg some too.
“Lord, you know I’ve not done much,
You know I’ve been no saint,
But Lord, please place me on your right.”
And He replies, “I can’t.”

Poet's note: This poem was written about 1973 when someone in our small women’s church group suggested that we all write a poem for our next monthly meeting. It simply came from my heart and expressed my own personal feelings of inadequateness. It caused me to take stock and attempt to do some things that I would never have had the courage to do before I wrote this poem.
