-he Came Unto His Own, And His Own Received Him Not- Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCA DEED FGGH IJJI DKLD MNNM OPPO BQRB

As Christ the Lord was passing byA
He came one night to a cottage doorB
He came a poor man to the poorC
He had no bed whereon to lieA
-
He asked in vain for a crust of breadD
Standing there in the frozen blastE
The door was locked and bolted fastE
Only a beggar the poor man saidD
-
Christ the Lord went further onF
Until He came to a palace gateG
There a king was keeping his stateG
In every window the candles shoneH
-
The king beheld Him out in the coldI
He left his guests in the banquet hallJ
He bade his servants tend them allJ
I wait on a Guest I know of oldI
-
Tis only a beggar man they saidD
Yes he said it is Christ the LordK
He spoke to Him a kindly wordL
He gave Him wine and he gave Him breadD
-
Now Christ is Lord of Heaven and HellM
And all the words of Christ are trueN
He touched the cottage and it grewN
He touched the palace and it fellM
-
The poor man is become a kingO
Never was man so sad as heP
Sorrow and Sin on the throne make threeP
He has no joy in mortal thingO
-
But the sun streams in at the cottage doorB
That stands where once the palace stoodQ
And the workman toiling to earn his foodR
Was never a king beforeB
