EXULT MY MUSE exult to seeA
Each envious waspish jealous thingB
Around its harmless venom flingB
And dart its powerless fangs at THEEA
Ne'er shalt THOU bend thy radiant wingB
To sweep the dark revengeful stringB
Or meanly stoop to steal a rayC
E'en from RINALDO'S glorious layC
Tho' his transcendent Verse should twineD
About thy heart each bliss divineD
-
O MUSE ADOR'D I woo thee nowE
From yon bright Heaven to hear my vowE
From thy blest wing a plume I'll stealF
And with its burning point recordG
Each firm indissoluble wordH
And with my lips the proud oath sealF
-
I SWEAR OH YE whose souls like mineD
Beam with poetic rays divineD
Attend my voice whate'er my FATEI
In this precarious wild'ring stateI
Whether the FIENDS with rancorous ireJ
Strike at my heart's unsullied fireK
While busy ENVY'S recreant guileL
Calls from my cheek THE PITYING SMILEL
Or jealous SLANDER mean and vainM
Essays my mind's BEST BOAST to stainM
Should all combine to check my laysN
And tear me from thy fost'ring gazeN
Ne'er will I quit thy burning eyeO
'Till my last eager gasping sighO
Shall from its earthly mansion flownP
Embrace THEE on thy STARRY THRONEP
-
Sweet soother of the pensive breastQ
Come in thy softest splendours dress'dQ
Bring with thee REASON chastely mildR
And CLASSIC TASTE her loveliest childR
And radiant FANCY'S offspring brightS
Then bid them all their charms uniteS
My mind's wild rapture to inspireJ
With thy own SACRED GENUINE FIREK
-
I ask no fierce terrific strainM
That rends the breast with tort'ring painM
No frantic flight no labour'd artT
To wring the fibres of the heartT
No frenzy'd GUIDE that madd'ning fliesU
O'er cloud wrapp'd hills thro' burning skiesU
-
That sails upon the midnight blastV
Or on the howling wild wave castV
Plucks from their dark and rocky bedW
The yelling DEMONS of the deepX
Who soaring o'er the COMET'S headW
The bosom of the WELKIN sweepX
Ne'er shall MY hand at Night's full noonY
Snatch from the tresses of the moonY
A sparkling crown of silv'ry hueZ
Besprent with studs of frozen dewZ
To deck my brow with borrow'd raysN
That feebly imitate the SUN'S RICH BLAZEN
-
AH lead ME not dear gentle MaidA2
To poison'd bow'r or haunted gladeA2
Where beck'ning spectres shrieking glareB2
Along the black infected airB2
While bold fantastic thunders leapX
Indignant midst the clam'rous deepX
As envious of its louder toneP
While lightnings shoot and mountains groanP
With close pent fires that from their baseC2
Hurl them amidst the whelming spaceC2
Where OCEAN'S yawning throat resoundsC2
And gorg'd with draughts of foamy ireJ
Madly o'er leaps its crystal boundsC2
And soars to quench the SUN'S proud fireK
While NATURE'S self shall start aghastV
Amid the desolating blastV
That grasps the sturdy OAK'S firm breastQ
And tearing off its shatter'd vestQ
Presents its gnarled bosom bareB2
To the hot light'ning's with'ring glareB2
-
TRANSCENDENT MUSE assert thy rightS
Chase from thy pure PARNASSIAN heightS
Each bold usurper of thy LYREJ
Each phantom of phosphoric fireK
That dares with wild fantastic flightS
The timid child of GENIUS frightS
That dares with pilfer'd glories shineD
Along the dazzling frenzy'd lineD
Where tinsel splendours cheat the mindD2
While REASON trembling far behindD2
Drops from her blushing front thy BAYSC2
And scorns to share the wreath of praiseC2
-
But when DIVINE RINALDO flingsC2
Soft rapture o'er the bounding stringsC2
When the bright flame that fills HIS soulE2
Bursts thro' the bonds of calm controulE2
And on enthusiastic wingsC2
To Heaven's Eternal Mansion springsC2
Or darting thro' the yielding skiesC2
O'er earth's disastrous valley fliesC2
Forbear his glorious flight to bindD2
YET o'er his TRUE POETIC MindD2
Expand thy chaste celestial rayC
Nor let fantastic fires diffuseC2
Deluding lustre round HIS MUSEC2
To lead HER glorious steps astrayC
AH let his matchless HARP prolongF2
The thrilling Tone the classic songF2
STILL bind his Brow with deathless BaysC2
STILL GRANT HIS VERSE A NATION'S PRAISEC2
-
But if by false persuasion ledW
His varying FANCY e'er should treadW
The paths of vitiated TasteG2
Where folly spreads a weedy wasteG2
OH may HE feel no more the genuine fireK
That warms HIS TUNEFUL SOUL and prompts THY SACRED LYREJ
