SOFT is the balmy breath of MayA
When from the op'ning lids of dayA
Meek twilight steals and from its wingsB
Translucent pearls of ether flingsB
MILD is the chaste Moon's languid eyeC
When gliding down the dappled skyC
She feebly lifts her spangled bowD
Around her glitt'ring darts to throwE
SWEET are the aromatic bowersF
When Night sends forth refreshing showersF
O'er every thirsty fainting budG
That drinks with joy the grateful floodG
Yet can the deeply wounded MindH
From these no lenient balsam findH
-
What can the force of anguish quellI
Where sullen Sorrow loves to dwellI
Where round the bosom's burning throneJ
HOPELESS the mingling PASSIONS groanJ
While thro' each guiv'ring scorching veinK
Rolls a revolving tide of painK
That struggling with the Storms of FATEL
Provokes her darkest direst HATEL
O BARD ADMIR'D if ought could moveM
The soul of Apathy to loveN
If o'er my aching bleeding breastO
Ought could diffuse the balm of restO
The pow'r is thine for oh thy laysP
Warm'd by thy Mind's transcendent blazeP
Dart thro' my frame with force divineQ
While all my rending woes combineQ
And thronging round thy glorious LYRER
In momentary bliss EXPIRER
-
So the meek ROSE that droops forlornS
Opes its cold breast to meet the mornS
And shaking round a brilliant show'rT
Tempts the bright SUN'S meridian pow'rT
Trembling its blushing cheek receivesU
The glowing kiss warms PHOEBUS givesV
Yet to his fire unconscious fliesW
And midst his burning glances DIESW
-
Why wilt thou fly why give thy formX
To the pale phantoms of the stormX
And from the dizzy madd'ning steepY
Dash thy proud harp while o'er the deepY
Each envious FIEND shall fiercely glareZ
And howling mock thy RASH DESPAIRZ
Ah wherefore prodigal of FAMEA2
Damp with thy tears the MUSE'S flameA2
Say dost thou think as the soft show'rT
Checks the wing'd lightning's fervid pow'rT
To quell the transports of Thy LyreR
And with cold Sorrow quench its fireB2
Know BARD SUPREME thy wond'rous songC2
Doth not to mortal power belongC2
The flame that to thy care is giv'nS
Owns an eternal source in Heav'nS
And like thy PURE ILLUSTRIOUS SoulD2
SHALL LIVE beyond thy weak controulD2
-
YES I will lead thee to some rockE2
Whose frowns the dashing billows mockE2
While the fierce LORD OF LIGHT shall reignS
DESPOTIC o'er th' ethereal plainS
Or when his fiery coursers flyD2
On red wings down the Western skyD2
While Ocean's curling waves unfoldF2
In one vast sheet of liquid goldF2
Then shalt thou mark CREATION'S prideG2
In slow and trembling tints subsideG2
'Till darkness stealing o'er the globeH2
Unfurls its sable spangled robeH2
Then shall thy conscious feelings findH
An emblem of the Human MindH
How grand ineffable and brightI2
When all its lustrous fires uniteI2
But when chill sorrow spreads its snareZ
And tempts its victim to DESPAIRZ
All all its proud perfections fadeJ2
In black oblivion's baneful shadeJ2
-
O SUN OF GENIUS pierce the cloudK2
That dares thy radiant glories shroudK2
Turn turn thy course to bowers of joyL2
Where rob'd in Bliss the Angel BoyL2
Shall spread each witching nameless sweetM2
Thy truant wand'ring heart to greetM2
There pour thy soul in faithful vowsN2
While thy own LAUREL'S deathless boughsN2
From each blest leaf shall drop a tearZ
To bathe the wounds of love sincereO2
There some chaste maid shall list thy laysP
In speechless eloquence of praiseP
And with her soft eye's melting glanceP2
Infold thee in delicious tranceP2
And when her heart's celestial shrineS
Shall burn with passion warm as thineS
Then shalt thou feel the rapt'rous glowD2
Which none but souls like THINE CAN KNOWD2
Then shalt thou hear her tongue declareZ
THOU ART NOT FORM'D FOR COLD DESPAIRZ
-
From ME the barb'rous fates uniteI2
To wrest each vision of delightI2
No gleam of joy my sad heart knowsQ2
No interval of calm reposeQ2
Save when thy LOV'D SERAPHIC StrainS
Thrills thro' my breast with quiv'ring painS
And bids each throbbing pulse deploreR2
That IF I E'ER COULD PLEASE I PLEASE NO MORER2
