quot Yes LAURA yes pure as the virgin snow'sA
quot That on the bosom of the whirlwind moveB
quot For thee my faithful endless passion glows quotC
-
LEONARDO TO LAURAD
-
-
COLD blows the wind upon the mountain's browE
In murmuring cadence wave the leafless woodsF
The feath'ry tribe mope on the frozen boughE
And icy fetters hold the silent floodsG
But endless spring the POET'S breast shall proveB
Whose GENIUS kindles at the torch of LOVEH
-
For HIM unfading blooms the fertile mindC
The current of the heart for ever flowsA
Fearless His bosom braves the wintry windC
While thro' each nerve eternal summer glowsA
In vain would chilling apathy controulI
The lambent fire that warms the lib'ral soulI
-
To me the limped brook the painted meadC
The crimson dawn the twilight's purple closeJ
The mirthful dance the shepherd's tuneful reedC
The musky fragrance of the opening roseA
To me alas all pleasures senseless proveB
Save the sweet converse of the FRIEND I loveH
