Upon a lonely desart BeachA
Where the white foam was scatter'dB
A little shed uprear'd its headC
Though lofty Barks were shatter'dB
The Sea weeds gath'ring near the doorD
A sombre path display'dE
And all around the deaf'ning roarD
Re echo'd on the chalky shoreD
By the green billows madeE
-
Above a jutting cliff was seenF
Where Sea Birds hover'd cravingG
And all around the craggs were boundH
With weeds for ever wavingG
And here and there a cavern wideI
Its shad'wy jaws display'dE
And near the sands at ebb of tideI
A shiver'd mast was seen to rideI
Where the green billows stray'dE
-
And often while the moaning windJ
Stole o'er the Summer OceanK
The moonlight scene was all sereneF
The waters scarce in motionK
Then while the smoothly slanting sandL
The tall cliff wrapp'd in shadeE
The Fisherman beheld a bandL
Of Spectres gliding hand in handL
Where the green billows play'dE
-
And pale their faces were as snowM
And sullenly they wander'dB
And to the skies with hollow eyesN
They look'd as though they ponder'dB
And sometimes from their hammock shroudO
They dismal howlings madeE
And while the blast blew strong and loudO
The clear moon mark'd the ghastly croudO
Where the green billows play'dO
-
And then above the haunted hutO
The Curlews screaming hover'dO
And the low door with furious roarD
The frothy breakers cover'dO
For in the Fisherman's lone shedO
A MURDER'D MAN was laidO
With ten wide gashes in his headO
And deep was made his sandy bedO
Where the green billows play'dO
-
A Shipwreck'd Mariner was heP
Doom'd from his home to severQ
Who swore to be thro' wind and seaP
Firm and undaunted everQ
And when the wave resistless roll'dO
About his arm he madeO
A packet rich of Spanish goldO
And like a British sailor boldO
Plung'd where the billows play'dO
-
The Spectre band his messmates braveR
Sunk in the yawning oceanK
While to the mast he lash'd him fastO
And brav'd the storm's commotionK
The winter moon upon the sandO
A silv'ry carpet madeO
And mark'd the Sailor reach the landO
And mark'd his murd'rer wash his handO
Where the green billows play'dO
-
And since that hour the FishermanS
Has toil'd and toil'd in vainT
For all the night the moony lightO
Gleams on the specter'd mainT
And when the skies are veil'd in gloomU
The Murd'rer's liquid wayV
Bounds o'er the deeply yawning tombU
And flashing fires the sands illumeU
Where the green billows playV
-
Full thirty years his task has beenW
Day after day more wearyP
For Heav'n design'd his guilty mindO
Should dwell on prospects drearyP
Bound by a strong and mystic chainT
He has not pow'r to strayV
But destin'd mis'ry to sustainT
He wastes in Solitude and PainT
A loathsome life awayV
