Oft have I seen yon Solitary ManA
Pacing the upland meadow On his browB
Sits melancholy mark'd with decent prideC
As it would fly the busy taunting worldD
And feed upon reflection Sometimes nearE
The foot of an old Tree he takes his seatF
And with the page of legendary loreG
Cheats the dull hour while Evening's sober eyeH
Looks tearful as it closes In the dellI
By the swift brook he loiters sad and muteJ
Save when a struggling sigh half murmur'd stealsK
From his wrung bosom To the rising moonL
His eye rais'd wistfully expression fraughtM
He pours the cherish'd anguish of his SoulN
Silent yet eloquent For not a soundO
That might alarm the night's lone centinelN
The dull eyed Owl escapes his trembling lipP
Unapt in supplication He is youngQ
And yet the stamp of thought so tempers youthR
That all its fires are faded What is HeS
And why when morning sails upon the breezeT
Fanning the blue hill's summit does he stayU
Loit'ring and sullen like a Truant boyV
Beside the woodland glen or stretch'd alongW
On the green slope watch his slow wasting formX
Reflected trembling on the river's breastY
-
His garb is coarse and threadbare and his cheekZ
Is prematurely faded The check'd tearA2
Dimming his dark eye's lustre seems to sayU
This world is now to me a barren wasteB2
A desart full of weeds and wounding thornsC2
And I am weary for my journey hereD2
Has been though short but chearless Is it soE2
Poor Traveller Oh tell me tell me allN
For I like thee am but a FugitiveF2
An alien from delight in this dark sceneG2
-
And now I mark thy features I beholdH2
The cause of thy complaining Thou art hereD2
A persecuted Exile one whose soulN
Unbow'd by guilt demands no patronageI2
From blunted feeling or the frozen handJ2
Of gilded Ostentation Thou poor PRIESTK2
Art here a Stranger from thy kindred tornL2
Thy kindred massacred thy quiet homeM2
The rural palace of some village scantN2
Shelter'd by vineyards skirted by fair meadsO2
And by the music of a shallow rillN
Made ever chearful now thou hast exchang'dP2
For stranger woods and valliesO2
-
What of thatQ2
Here or on torrid desarts o'er the worldD
Of trackless waves or on the frozen cliffsO2
Of black Siberia thou art not aloneR2
For there on each on all The DEITYS
Is thy companion still Then exiled MANA
Be chearful as the Lark that o'er yon hillN
In Nature's language wild yet musicalN
Hails the Creator nor thus sullenlyN
Repine that through the day the sunny beamS2
Of lust'rous fortune gilds the palace roofT2
While thy short path in this wild labyrinthU2
Is lost in transient shadowE2
Who that livesO2
Hath not his portion of calamityS
Who that feels can boast a tranquil bosomV2
The fever throbbing in the Tyrant's veinsO2
In quick strong language tells the daring wretchW2
That He is mortal like the poorest slaveX2
Who wears his chain yet healthfully suspiresO2
-
The sweetest Rose will wither while the stormX
Passes the mountain thistle The bold BirdY2
Whose strong eye braves the ever burning OrbZ2
Falls like the Summer Fly and has at mostA3
But his allotted sojourn EXILED MANA
Be chearful Thou art not a fugitiveF2
All are thy kindred all thy brothers hereD2
The hoping trembling Creatures of one GODB3
