Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC DEFFGGCC HHIICCDEJJBBKKLL MMCCKKNNEEOOJJHHKKPP OOEEQQMMUPON a garden's perfum'd bed | A |
With various gaudy colours spread | A |
Beneath the shelter of a ROSE | B |
A BUTTERFLY had sought repose | B |
Faint with the sultry beams of day | C |
Supine the beauteous insect lay | C |
- | |
A BEE impatient to devour | D |
The nectar sweets of ev'ry flow'r | E |
Returning to her golden store | F |
A weight of fragrant treasure bore | F |
With envious eye she mark'd the shade | G |
Where the poor BUTTERFLY was laid | G |
And resting on the bending spray | C |
Thus murmur'd forth her drony lay | C |
- | |
Thou empty thing whose merit lies | H |
In the vain boast of orient dies | H |
Whose glittering form the slightest breath | I |
Robs of its gloss and fades to death | I |
Who idly rov'st the summer day | C |
Flutt'ring a transient life away | C |
Unmindful of the chilling hour | D |
The nipping frost the drenching show'r | E |
Who heedless of to morrow's fare | J |
Mak'st present bliss thy only care | J |
Is it for THEE the damask ROSE | B |
With such transcendent lustre glows | B |
Is it for such a giddy thing | K |
Nature unveils the blushing spring | K |
Hence from thy lurking place and know | L |
'Tis not for THEE her beauties glow | L |
- | |
The BUTTERFLY with decent pride | M |
In gentle accents thus reply'd | M |
'Tis true I flutter life away | C |
In pastime innocent and gay | C |
The SUN that decks the blushing spring | K |
Gives lustre to my painted wing | K |
'Tis NATURE bids each colour vie | N |
With rainbow tints of varying die | N |
I boast no skill no subtle pow'r | E |
To steal the balm from ev'ry flow'r | E |
The ROSE that only shelter'd ME | O |
Has pour'd a load of sweets on THEE | O |
Of merit we have both our share | J |
Heav'n gave thee ART and made me FAIR | J |
And tho' thy cunning can despise | H |
The humble worth of harmless flies | H |
Remember envious busy thing | K |
Thy honey'd form conceals a sting | K |
Enjoy thy garden while I rove | P |
The sunny hill the woodbine grove | P |
And far remov'd from care and THEE | O |
Embrace my humble destiny | O |
While in some lone sequester'd bow'r | E |
I'll live content beyond thy pow'r | E |
For where ILL NATURE holds her reign | Q |
TASTE WORTH and BEAUTY plead in vain | Q |
E'en GENIUS must to PRIDE submit | M |
When ENVY wings the shaft of WIT | M |
