UPON a garden's perfum'd bedA
With various gaudy colours spreadA
Beneath the shelter of a ROSEB
A BUTTERFLY had sought reposeB
Faint with the sultry beams of dayC
Supine the beauteous insect layC
-
A BEE impatient to devourD
The nectar sweets of ev'ry flow'rE
Returning to her golden storeF
A weight of fragrant treasure boreF
With envious eye she mark'd the shadeG
Where the poor BUTTERFLY was laidG
And resting on the bending sprayC
Thus murmur'd forth her drony layC
-
Thou empty thing whose merit liesH
In the vain boast of orient diesH
Whose glittering form the slightest breathI
Robs of its gloss and fades to deathI
Who idly rov'st the summer dayC
Flutt'ring a transient life awayC
Unmindful of the chilling hourD
The nipping frost the drenching show'rE
Who heedless of to morrow's fareJ
Mak'st present bliss thy only careJ
Is it for THEE the damask ROSEB
With such transcendent lustre glowsB
Is it for such a giddy thingK
Nature unveils the blushing springK
Hence from thy lurking place and knowL
'Tis not for THEE her beauties glowL
-
The BUTTERFLY with decent prideM
In gentle accents thus reply'dM
'Tis true I flutter life awayC
In pastime innocent and gayC
The SUN that decks the blushing springK
Gives lustre to my painted wingK
'Tis NATURE bids each colour vieN
With rainbow tints of varying dieN
I boast no skill no subtle pow'rE
To steal the balm from ev'ry flow'rE
The ROSE that only shelter'd MEO
Has pour'd a load of sweets on THEEO
Of merit we have both our shareJ
Heav'n gave thee ART and made me FAIRJ
And tho' thy cunning can despiseH
The humble worth of harmless fliesH
Remember envious busy thingK
Thy honey'd form conceals a stingK
Enjoy thy garden while I roveP
The sunny hill the woodbine groveP
And far remov'd from care and THEEO
Embrace my humble destinyO
While in some lone sequester'd bow'rE
I'll live content beyond thy pow'rE
For where ILL NATURE holds her reignQ
TASTE WORTH and BEAUTY plead in vainQ
E'en GENIUS must to PRIDE submitM
When ENVY wings the shaft of WITM
