'Twas on a Mountain near the Western MainA
An ALIEN dwelt A solitary HutB
Built on a jutting crag o'erhung with weedsC
Mark'd the poor Exile's home Full ten long yearsD
The melancholy wretch had liv'd unseenE
By all save HENRY a lov'd little SonF
The partner of his sorrows On the dayG
When Persecution in the sainted guiseH
Of Liberty spread wide its venom'd pow'rI
The brave Saint HUBERT fled his Lordly homeJ
And with his baby Son the mountain soughtK
-
Resolv'd to cherish in his bleeding breastL
The secret of his birth Ah birth too highM
For his now humbled state from infancyN
He taught him labour's task He bade him chearI
The dreary day of cold adversityN
By patience and by toil The Summer mornO
Shone on the pillow of his rushy bedP
The noontide sultry hour he fearless pastQ
On the shagg'd eminence while the young KidR
Skipp'd to the cadence of his minstrelsyN
-
At night young HENRY trimm'd the faggot fireI
While oft Saint HUBERT wove the ample netS
To snare the finny victim Oft they sangT
And talk'd while sullenly the waves would soundU
Dashing the sandy shore Saint HUBERT'S eyesN
Would swim in tears of fondness mix'd with joyV
When he observ'd the op'ning harvest richW
Of promis'd intellect which HENRY'S soulX
Whate'er the subject of their talk display'dY
-
Oft the bold Youth in question intricateB
Would seek to know the story of his birthZ
Oft ask who bore him and with curious skillA2
Enquire why he and only one besideB2
Peopled the desart mountain Still his SireI
Was slow of answer and in words obscureI
Varied the conversation Still the mindC2
Of HENRY ponder'd for in their lone hutB
A daily journal would Saint HUBERT makeD2
Of his long banishment and sometimes speakE2
Of Friends forsaken Kindred massacredF2
Proud mansions rich domains and joyous scenesN
For ever faded lostG2
One winter timeH2
'Twas on the Eve of Christmas the shrill blastQ
Swept o'er the stormy main The boiling foamJ
Rose to an altitude so fierce and strongI2
-
That their low hovel totter'd Oft they stoleX
To the rock's margin and with fearful eyesN
Mark'd the vex'd deep as the slow rising moonJ2
Gleam'd on the world of waters 'Twas a sceneE
Would make a Stoic shudder For amidR
The wavy mountains they beheld aloneK2
A LITTLE BOAT now scarcely visibleL2
And now not seen at all or like a buoyN
Bounding and buffetting to reach the shoreI
-
Now the full Moon in crimson lustre shoneK2
Upon the outstretch'd Ocean The black cloudsN
Flew stiffly on the wild blast followingM2
And as they flew dimming the angry mainA
With shadows horrible Still the small boatN2
Struggled amid the waves a sombre speckO2
Upon the wide domain of howling DeathP2
Saint HUBERT sigh'd while HENRY'S speaking eyeM
Alternately the stormy scene survey'dY
And his low hovel's safety So past onQ2
The hour of midnight and since first they knewR2
The solitary scene no midnight hourI
E'er seem'd so long and wearyN
While they stoodS2
Their hands fast link'd together and their eyesN
Fix'd on the troublous Ocean suddenlyN
The breakers bounding on the rocky shoreI
Left the small wreck and crawling on the sideB2
Of the rude crag a HUMAN FORM was seenE
And now he climb'd the foam wash'd precipiceN
And now the slip'ry weeds gave way while heN
Descended to the sands The moon rose highM
The wild blast paus'd and the poor shipwreck'd ManT2
Look'd round aghast when on the frowning steepU2
He marked the lonely exiles Now he call'dV2
But he was feeble and his voice was lostG2
Amid the din of mingling sounds that roseN
From the wild scene of clamourI
Down the steepU2
Saint HUBRET hurried boldly venturousN
Catching the slimy weeds from point to pointW2
And unappall'd by peril At the footX2
Of the rude rock the fainting marinerI
Seiz'd on his outstretch'd arm impatient wildY2
With transport exquisite But ere they heardF2
The blest exchange of sounds articulateZ2
A furious billow rolling on the steepU2
Engulph'd them in OblivionF
On the rockA3
Young HENRY stood with palpitating heartB3
And fear struck e'en to madness Now he call'dV2
Louder and louder as the shrill blast blewR2
But mid the elemental strife of soundsN
No human voice gave answer The clear moonJ2
No longer quiver'd on the curling mainA
But mist encircled shed a blunted lightC3
Enough to shew all things that mov'd aroundU
Dreadful but indistinctly The black weedsN
Wav'd as the night blast swept them and alongI2
The rocky shore the breakers sounding lowD3
Seem'd like the whisp'ring of a million soulsN
Beneath the green deep mourningM2
Four long hoursN
The lorn Boy listen'd four long tedious hoursN
Pass'd wearily away when in the EastE3
The grey beam coldly glimmer'd All aloneK2
Young HENRY stood aghast his Eye wide fix'dF3
While his dark locks uplifted by the stormG3
Uncover'd met its fury On his cheekE2
Despair sate terrible For mid the woesN
Of poverty and toil he had not knownK2
Till then the horror giving chearless hourI
Of TOTAL SOLITUDEH3
-
He spoke he groan'dI3
But no responsive voice no kindred toneK2
Broke the dread pause For now the storm had ceas'dE3
And the bright Sun beams glitter'd on the breastL
Of the green placid Ocean To his HutB
The lorn Boy hasten'd there the rushy couchJ3
The pillow still indented met his gazeN
And fix'd his eye in madness From that hourI
A maniac wild the Alien Boy has beenK3
His garb with sea weeds fring'd and his wan cheekE2
The tablet of his mind disorder'd chang'dL3
Fading and worn with care And if by chanceN
A Sea beat wand'rer from the outstretch'd mainA
Views the lone Exile and with gen'rous zealM3
Hastes to the sandy beach he suddenlyN
Darts 'mid the cavern'd cliffs and leaves pursuitN3
To track him where no footsteps but his ownK2
Have e'er been known to venture YET HE LIVESN
A melancholy proof that Man may bearI
All the rude storms of Fate and still suspireI
By the wide world forgottenF
