LOVE I renounce thy tyrant swayA
I mock thy fascinating artB
MINE be the calm unruffled dayA
That brings no torment to the heartB
The tranquil mind the noiseless sceneC
Where FANCY with enchanting mienC
Shall in her right hand lead alongD
The graceful patroness of SongD
Where HARMONY shall softly flingE
Her light tones o'er the dulcet stringE
And with her magic LYRE composeF
Each pang that throbs each pulse that glowsF
Till her resistless strains dispenseG
The balm of blest INDIFFERENCEH
-
LOVE I defy thy vaunted pow'rI
In still Retirement's sober bow'rI
I'll rest secure no fev'rish painJ
Shall dart its hot shafts thro' my brainJ
No start'ling dreams invade my mindK
No spells my stagnate pulses bindK
No jealous agonies impartB
Their madd'ning poisons to my heartB
But sweetly lull'd to placid restL
The sensate tenant of my breastL
Shall one unshaken course pursueM
Such as thy vot'ries never knewM
-
SWEET SOLITUDE pure Nature's childN
Fair pensive daughter of the wildN
Nymph of the Forest thee I pressO
My weary sick'ning soul to blessO
To give my heart the dear reposeF
That smiles unmov'd at transient woesF
That shelter'd from Life's trivial caresP
Each calm delicious comfort sharesP
While conscious rectitude of mindK
Blends with each thought a bliss refin'dK
And scorning fear's soul chilling pow'rI
Dares court REFLECTION'S dang'rous hourQ
To scrutinize with cautious artB
Each hidden channel of the heartB
-
Ah gentle maiden let me strayA
Where Innocence for ever gayA
Shall lead me to her loveliest bow'rsP
And crown my brow with thornless flow'rsP
And strew the weedy paths of timeR
With Resignation's balm sublimeR
While Rosy SPRING shall smiling hasteS
On light steps o'er the dewy wasteS
Eager her brightest gems to shedT
Around my verdant perfum'd bedT
And in her train the glowing hoursP
Shall bathe their wings in scented show'rsP
And shake the fost'ring drops to earthU
To nurse meek blossoms into birthU
And when autumnal zephyrs flyV
Sportive beneath the sapphire skyV
Or in the stream their pinions laveW
Or teach the golden sheaves to waveW
I'll watch the ruby eye of dayA
In awful lustre glide awayA
And closing sink to transient restL
On panting Ocean's pearly breastL
-
O SOLITUDE how blest the lotX
Of her who shares thy silent cotX
Who with celestial peace pursuesP
The pensive wand'rings of the MUSEP
To stray unseen where'er she leadsP
O'er grassy hills and sunny meadsP
Or at the still of Night's cold noonY
To gaze upon the chilly MoonY
While PHILOMELA'S mournful SongD
Meanders fairy haunts amongZ
To tell the hopeless LOVER'S earA2
That SYMPATHY'S FOND BIRD is nearB2
Whose note shall soothe his aching heartB
Whose grief shall emulate his smartB
And by its sadly proud excessP
Make every pang he suffers lessP
For oft in passion's direst woesP
The veriest wretch can yield reposeP
While from the voice of kindred griefC2
We gain a sad but kind reliefC2
-
AH LOVE thou barb'rous fickle boyD2
Thou semblance of delusive joyD2
Too long my heart has been thy slaveW
For thou hast seen me wildly raveW
And with impetuous frenzy hasteS
Heedless across the thorny wasteS
And drink the cold dews ere they fellE2
On my bare bosom's burning swellE2
When bleak the wintry whirlwinds blewM
And swift the sultry meteors flewM
Yes thou hast seen me tyrant pow'rI
At freezing midnight's witching hourQ
Start from my couch subdu'd oppres'dS
While jealous anguish wrung my breastS
While round my eager senses flewM
Dark brow'd Suspicion's wily crewM
Taunting my soul with restless ireF2
That set my pulsate brain on fireQ
What didst thou then Inhuman BoyD2
Didst thou not paint each well feign'd joyD2
Each artful smile each study'd graceP
That deck'd some sordid rival's faceP
Didst thou not feed my madd'ning senseP
With Love's delicious eloquenceP
While on my ear thy accents pour'dS
The voice of him my soul ador'dS
His rapt'rous tones his strains divineG2
And all those vows that once were mineG2
But mild Reflection's piercing rayA
Soon chas'd the fatal dream awayA
And with it all my rending woesP
While in its place majestic roseP
The Angel TRUTH her stedfast mienC
Bespoke the conscious breast sereneC
Her eye more radiant than the dayA
Beam'd with persuasion's temper'd rayA
Sweet was her voice and while she sungZ
Myriads of Seraphs hover'd roundS
Eager to iterate the soundS
That on her heav'n taught accents hungZ
Wond'ring I gaz'd my throbbing breastS
Celestial energies confestS
Transports before unfelt unknownH2
Throng'd round my bosom's tremb'ling throneH2
While ev'ry nerve with rapture strangeI2
Seem'd to partake the blissful changeI2
-
Now with unmov'd and dauntless EyeV
I mark thy winged arrows flyV
No more thy baneful spells shall bindS
The purer passions of my mindS
No more false Love shall jealous fearsP
Inflame my check with scalding tearsP
Or shake my vanquish'd sense or rendS
My aching heart with poignant throesP
Or with tumultuous fevers blendS
Self wounding visionary woesP
-
No more I'll waste the midnight hourQ
In expectation's silent bow'rI
And musing o'er thy transcripts dearB2
Efface their sorrows with a tearJ2
No more with timid fondness waitS
Till morn unfolds her glitt'ring gateS
When thy lov'd song's seraphic soundS
Wou'd on my quiv'ring nerves reboundS
With proud delight no more thy blushK2
Shall o'er my cheek unbidden rushK2
And scorning ev'ry strong controulV
Unveil the tumults of my soulV
No more when in retirement blestS
Shalt thou obtrude upon my restS
And tho' encircled with delightS
Absorb my sense obscure my sightS
Give to my eye the vacant glanceP
The mien that marks the mental tranceP
The fault'ring tone the sudden startS
The trembling hand the bursting heartS
The devious step that strolls alongD
Unmindful of the gazing throngD
The feign'd indiff'rence prone to chideS
That blazons what it seeks to hideS
-
Nor do I dread thy vengeful wilesP
Thy soothing voice thy winning smilesP
Thy trick'ling tear thy mien forlornL2
Thy pray'r thy sighs thy oaths I scornL2
No more on ME thy arrows show'rI
Capricious Love I BRAVE THY POW'RI
